Wheel offset

Hello,

what is the min offset which I can run on the Octavia RS?

I know the stock is 18" 7,5J and ET48, but can I get away with ET40 or even ET35 with 8J on 18" rim?

And also is the center cap 57.1 or 66.6?

You need to use this.

According to that the wheel with a 35 offset will 6.7mm further away from the strut and 19.4mm further out from the original wheel. Fitment on the arches will then depend on your tyre choice and suspension setup, might be ok with some stretch?

ET 40 will be almost the same on the inside and 15mm further out into the arches so that might be a better bet and you can always play around with a 5mm or less spacer afterwards to get it just right.

Put the numbers in and have a play around and see what you think.

I am currently also debating between 8j et44 and et40. I know for sure et44 would fit in the wheel arches, while et40 would be on the limit, but some wheels like Brock B38 have ABE on ET40 8J so it should fit fine. What has me confused is the fact that AEZ/DOTZ configurator spits out warnings that ET40 would need wheel arch modifications, but maybe they are just overly conservative.

It comes down to ET40 sticking out 14.7mm further than stock wheels, people are running 15MM spacers just fine so it should fit perfectly fine.

I'd consider the scrub radius as well, which is important for the handling of the car. I know people are putting spacers, etc., but still - I like to play it safe... :) Check out this site and calculator:

Yeah, that is exactly why I'm still thinking. Basically 8J ET44 would stick out 10.7mm more, wheel would be wider for the looks and it would still stay close to stock in terms of scrub radius. ET40 is only 4mm, but it's still further away from stock, I don't think I need it.

I've asked before in this forum if anyone knew what the scrub radius on the Octavia was... Noone seemed to know, but I found some info on the internet that usually VW (and FWD cars) have a negative scrub radius. The site I mentioned above default the scrub radius to 0. Anyways, not sure if this helps or makes things more complicate for you, but thought to share it, as I spent some time searching for info on the topic... :)

No one knows it for any car anymore, if you want to figure it out you basically need to go out and measure it with a string all old-school, but it doesn't make that much of a difference for a street car so no one does. You could maybe try to find out what it was on a MK7 Golf, a lot of people have track setups on them so maybe someone actually went out and measured it. But there is still no guarantee that it's the same on Octavia.

I was wondering the same thing a couple months back when I was buying new wheels. I couldn't find any pictures for reference which made it hard. I ended up with 18x8 et40. I've attached pictures so people can see how they fit.

40 offset is still easily inside the arch. You could even go a little lower and get away with it. I think et35 would be perfect.

Nice. Have you noticed any handling differences?

Didn't have a chance to properly drive anywhere yet, but I will report if anything pops up. I don't expect to see any difference with this particular size, considering the wheels sit in pretty much the same spot, but are just 0.5inch wider.

Looks nice in the photo

But it wouldn’t stay like that where I live as every country road seems to get muddy field run off which would splatter the sides with brown muddy water.  Some of the muddy puddles can be there many days after rain stops, and all season season tyres (with their diagonal grooves) clear the water better by throwing it more to the side, so as soon as someone comes other way the car gets more muddy.

If you stick to main roads, avoid getting muddy, but get a grey-brown salty crud covering the car sides instead.

Mind if I necro? :)

I bought a set of AEZ 18" 8J ET46. Its what their configurator spit out for the car. I`m planning to put 225/45/R18 on these. I see you guys fit 8J`s with no issues - 1.5 years head all still great?

Yeah, the 8J is not a problem overall. You need to be careful as it provides less protection for the wheel - I managed to curb mine a few times... Other than that, all good.

Does anyone know at what torque should the Skoda safety bolts be tightened? Dealer told me there`s a booklet inside, follow instructions - it has zero information on this (indeed has a short message written in like 10 languages and absolutely nothing useful). I know the main ones should be at 120Nm.

A bit of photos on the AEZ Kaiman 18" which I got installed today. Looking at them, I think a 18" stock at 225/50 would have looked perfect as arches still have space and tires/wheels looks a bit undersized to my opinion (if speedo was adjusted).

ET46 at 8J - absolutely no issues and I really enjoy the way the car behaves now - no bent in curves and very solid grip. Indeed still cannot determine for sure if comfort changed at all but perhaps slightly firmer - what a shame Skoda did go with 16" and 17" in most modifications. Thanks for all comments!
