Underseal

Featured Replies

Washed the car this weekend and noticed something hanging down underneath. About a 10 inch strip of underseal had come away from the vertical lip on the front offside jacking point. I Couldnt get in a position to have a good look but I can imagine its bare metal underneath which will be open to the elements....

When it warms up a bit i'll see if I can get under the car to check it out.

What are people using to re underseal these days ? In days gone past when I actually did stuff to my cars I used a black spray on Wayoyl ?

I used the Hammerite underseal with waxoyl. A small tin, which I’m sure is all you’ll need, was about a fiver I think. Bought it from Amazon IIRC. A lump came off the jacking point when I lifted the car to remove the alloys.

Best remember that if applying your own Rust Inhibitors or Underseal that you make sure there is no rust / corrosion and the correct treatment is done.

(Then keep an eye on that area into the future.   This is why some use Rust Inhibitor then Clear Waxoyl.)

You will invalidate the Corrosion Warranty for that area and any near it.      Repair not to Factory Spec by an Authorised repairer.

Not that Skoda Main Dealers do the Body Inspections to keep the Corrosion Warranty Valid and the T&C's of the Warranty does not require Annual or Bi-annual checks.

Skoda UK do whoever knock back Warranty Claims because no Body Inspections were carried out.

They know who it is not doing them though.

Don't think I would get away with this one saying it wasn't caused by any external factors lol ! My first car was a 1983 Capri 2.0 'S' so I have plenty of experience fighting rust I'm just a bit out of date as my last 'old' car was a TVR.

The warranty is only for holed panels anyway and if you have not and not going to have that then no issues.

I am just pointing out if underseal is missing where it never happened because of someone being careless then show the area to an Approved Repairer and have Skoda pay to get he area covered up.

Or you just DIY and know it is done and if any issue then Skoda / VW will have someone not blind spot there was repairs / treatments done.

I’d think the likelihood of rust settling-in after a few days exposure is pretty remote. In my case the weather was bone dry in 2019 and I appled the underseal the following day. The underside is covered in underseal and where I slapped it on there was absolutely no difference in colour or texture.

This is February & maybe not the most dry or salt free time of the year.

But dry bare metal and etch primer or rust inhibitor and job done before covering it up is easy enough.
