2008 skoda fabia 1.4 starting issues,

Featured Replies

Hi, i have been asked to fix a 1.4 skoda that

Keeps failing to start or kind of bogging down when it sarts and dies,

The garage though it was fuel pump so they changed that, then said ecu at so i changed it, then they said its the cat, i argued the case and turns out its not that but now the owner wants to pull it out of the garage for me to fix it,

I dont mind doing it as ive got an idea of what it may be, im looking twoards air intake and fueling as my little computer tells me the readings are above average for this engine,,

No exact data atm as ive not been with the car in over 2 weeks,

Anyone had similar problems could shine a light on something,

Im sure it will be as simple as mass air flow, coil pack, lambda /o2 sensors, not too clued up on breathers, pcv ect on these??

Firstly check the plastic brake servo pipe as they are known to split causing a vacuum leak.

Thank, i should be getting the car back Saturday but keen to check this now as ive had this happen on an old megane,

The car does drive ok until you try taking it up a steep hill, feels awfully sluggish but i put a bit of that down to it only being a 1.4 🤷‍♂️

2008 must be a Mk2 right? Petrol or Diesel engine?

Help us to help you, give us a clue.

There is some odd-ball late reg ones. The car could be an example of this. Otherwise, it's in the wrong bit. We'll just have to wait for the OP to clarify, or else it is complete speculation.

He mentions coil pack so I assume it's petrol.

Yes its a mk2 1.4 petrol :)

"little computer" - is that a VAG Group specific code reader or a generic reader. I would strongly recommend getting any codes read through VCDS or similar if not, for which there is a map of owners on here. You may be better off adding an engine code to allow the people more experience in petrol to assist.

No MAF on this engine, MAP sensor in the inlet manifold instead.

Breather/PCV/PCV heater module is on the back of the block with a convoluted output hose up to the inlet mani just under the TB. Item 19 here: cylinder block with pistons; oil sump - Fabia(FAB) [EUROPA 2008 year] (7zap.com)

Can get clogged up and cause overpressure/oil leakage elsewhere.

Engine coolant temperature sensor is worth looking at if your 'little computer' can read that data from the engine ECU. If that's reading well down on reality it may cause overfuelling.

The gauge in the cluster, if there even is one, is heavily 'sanitised' to read mid-range over a wide real range of temps, so can be misleading.

Two topics merged.

Model 2 doesn't have a gauge, model 3 does have, model 1 not applicable as not available with 1.4 16V per 2008 Fabia brochure. If a model 2 OBD dongle and Torque or similar will be required by OP to read "reported" temp as the lack of a gauge is replaced by a blue light that extinguishes at 45 deg.C per Torque. This allowed me to identify defective thermostat on my Greenline with only the blue light.

There has been a recent post of non-starting (as suggested in original post) which turned out to be CTS giving a reported temp of over 100 deg.c when cold triggering a not allowed to start lock out.
