Do I have a potential cam belt/chain problem?

Featured Replies

A few months ago we purchased a 2013 Fabia Mk2 1.2l (103-105bhp) TSI Elegance estate. We’ve been very pleased with it and the engine is surprisingly willing yet frugal.

But I keep reading comments across the Net about cam chain issues with the Fabia Mk2. I’m not even sure if our one has a cam chain or a belt. So is there anything iro my 2013 cam ‘whatever’ I need to be keeping an eye on, or any other potentially big issues I should be on the look out for going forwards?

Also, there seems to be different figures for the bhp output of the 1.2 TSI engine from around my year. Apart from the 90bhp version, some sources show it as 103bhp, whilst others show 105bhp. I’m guessing it’s the same engine and they are just rounding it up, but again I’d welcome some clarity.

Thanks.

Confusion can be from 103 bhp / 105 PS if that is what you have.

It is a Cam Chain Engine.

(Plenty threads in this section on them. Plenty about chains and rattle and early ones to 2012)

Hi ND, do you know the engine code?

Hi Roottoot. All I know (being mechanically under-skilled) is I have the engine that falls in the 103-105bhp category (ie it’s not the 90bhp version). I couldn’t tell you if it has a cam chain or belt drive. Is there an easy way to find out?

Where would I find that?

Is this useful from the windscreen?

VIN removed.

Based on the options, it can only be this one:

But does that tell me if it’s a cam chain or belt? because I’m not able to tell sadly.

Try putting your car registration into parts suppliers like Halfords and Opie Oil (to name two) and that should bring up your car's details including engine number including the type code (CBZB).  You always need to cross check any information you get as all databases have errors and omissions (particularly parts catalogues, even from the part or car manufacturers).  And of course cross check any info you get from any web source, particularly if it's from me.

That's your VIN - if you want to remove or edit that post now you'll need to join Freedom as that gives more than (IIRC) 15 minutes for edits.

Your engine code (and number and VIN) will obviously be on your V5C  (vehicle registration form, or "log book" if you're as old as me) and both will also be labels on the car in various places.

Mate, it's chain. Got the 1.2 tsi. I believe from the mk3 they went back to belts on some engines

You have a 2013 Mk2 Fabia 1.2 TSI  Euro 5 emissions so a cam chain and not the later 1.2 TSI with a cam belt.

Oh ok. Somewhere else I read they changed from chains to cam belts on the Fabia in 2012, but maybe that wasn’t this 1.2 TSI model. But at least I know it’s a cam chain now.

So, should I ask my local mechanic to keep an eye on it for stretching?

The chain tensioners got an update / upgrade, the issues were before your car.

Thanks, that’s really useful and reassuring to know!

@KeithCheetham what are you confused about, I can't see I've put anything wrong, if you tell me perhaps I can explain - or you can correct me.

Left me a 'Confused' in the thumb-up circle wotsit on the bottom right corner of the posts on my post 3 hours ago now, the one after the three from Noddydog.

Can you see anything wrong with my post then (answer in seven or less words if possible please).

Blimey, you've got a thin skin, you're gonna need to learn to ignore stuff like that.

Search for data but assume it could be wrong, so cross check - against other possibly incorrect info? Your post after that gave the correct source - V5 or car build data tag.

Yes, all info is possibly incorrect you have to check to find what you think is reliable and (think is) correct, I don't know about car build tags, I would assume them to be correct, unless the car is dodgy, but V5C could have errors less so now I expect unless you got one of those print-your own.

Nah, I'm not boffer'd just curious, skull 'n' crossbones can be put up every time.

As you may have noticed I'm not very good at spotting typos and I see the missing words.

Being generous, I'll give you 15 words for that reply, disappointingly long.  😄

I bet you thought I'd posted in the wrong thread. 😊 🤣

Quite often in the spare wheel well. Gives engine code, gearbox code, colour code and general build spec/options list that can be de-coded from an online listing

Thanks from me, I thought before I'd seen that the tag could be in the wheel well but wasn't sure what models and years that might apply to so didn't put it.
