Superb II, Elegance 2l, 170. Automatic, not changing gear….

Featured Replies

Hi all

MY Superb II has started to play up, its getting into the habit of not changing up a gear. It can happen when I move off or when I am driving down the street after turning a corner. The engine is screaming until I change up with the paddles, normally it’s 2nd or 3rd gear and the engine is warm
Is there a sensor that could be playing up/suspect.

thanks all

Martin

First thing is get a fault scan done and see if the ECU has recorded any codes.

Thanks, I’ll see if I can get it done.

@Rotory has the DSG been getting oil changed to the 40,000 mile schedule and when was the last time?

Hi,

my vehicle is a low mileage car, it’s just reaching 40k at the moment, so will be due the oil change.

I think we may have a winner for the actual fault here.

Many thanks for your reply Ken.

Looks that way,  wondering what the oil actually does to the gearbox to cause this fault. Dirty sensor ?.

The oil does a huge amount of work in there: lubrication of moving parts, hydraulic fluid for actuators, cooling of the internals. If the car has done a lot of urban driving, the fluid is probably done for.

Many thanks Chimaera, much appreciated.

As @chimaera says; also 40_000 miles is the recommendation for a transmission oil change in all ZF Transmission gearboxes, irrespective of the make and model of car they're fitted to.

Many thanks Ken. 👍

40k for a 9 year old diesel? That's not low mileage. That's extremely low. Have you owned the car since new? Someone might have "modified" the meter.... And isn't there a maximum age (in years) for the DSG oil?

I got it 6 months old, but I worked away for lots of those years. Car was laid up for at least 50% of the time !.

Just been looking for a change kit, would this kit be suitable. Concerned about the filter really.

You will also need diagnostic equipment and a special adapter for filling the gearbox - drain and fill use the same port at the bottom of the housing so you need the fill adapter to actually be able to fill it. This is one of those jobs where the savings for DIYing it are marginal compared to dealer/indy.

Thank you, I was hoping to fill from the top. Our local Skoda dealer closed their skoda dept and now I would have to go into the city to a dealer.

Is Diagnostic equipment 100% necessary.

Might have to scour the local independents.

There is only one port on the gearbox which is at the bottom. Filling from the top is not possible. You need diagnostics to monitor transmission fluid temperature during the change procedure, which includes starting the engine and cycling through the gears after the initial fill. If you want to tackle the job, go to https://erwin.skoda-auto.cz/erwin/showHome.do and download the service manuals. An hour's subscription is usually enough to get all the pdfs for the car.

Thank you very much

Technically there is no filler hole in the top of the gearbox, but it's certainly possible using the oil filter hole.

It's no more difficult than a regular oil change.

Thank you,

Cant believe that someone can design a gearbox that requires such a complicated oil change procedure………oil temp at 35°C. In Queensland a standard summers day is 40°C. .  How do I cycle through the tears during oil change……it’s automatic.

Oil expands as it gets hotter, if the oil gets too hot during the change procedure the volume check will result in a lower fill than is needed.

Cycling through the gears can be done using the tiptronic function - from D pop the selector lever to the left, push forward to go up, pull back to go down. This procedure ensures the new fluid gets into all the moving parts while the transmission is not loaded up.
