hi guys

 

once my engine has been rebuilt, is there other things i should clean/service? 

 

i read that the fuel tank could do with a clean but i have no idea how to do that. 

 

so what other areas should i look at? i really want to try keep this car longer.

Not really, just stick to the service schedules.

Fuel tank is plastic so I've no idea where you got the idea that it needs cleaning, old steel tanks get rusty on the inside, perhaps that's where that comes from.

sorry i thought the fuel tank was metal, ok that saves me a job then.

Hi froggy , been reading your thread mate , it’s not your fault that the 1.2 engine gave up, you can service these engines to death and they still go kaput they are absolutely notorious for timing Chain problems and subsequent death happened to my mothers 3 cylinder 1.2 also twice 

Change your oil and oil filter every year is a big engine saver no matter on mileage just change it and always use good quality oil and filters  fuel filter should be replaced every  3 years if you are doing around 12000 miles a year a bit longer if less but don't leave it more than 5 years, this is not mentioned in most service plans as Skoda just say when it's blocked get it changed but by then it can do a fair but of damage to fuel parts , I always take my spark plugs out every 2 years check them and have renewed them as 4 years seems mad to leave them in without removing them, can cost you a load of money if you strip threads, gearbox if manual check every year and top up as required, I also change my coolant every 5 years and always use a really good quality not halfords or such like can damage the water pump vaines and seals, I have always found checking underside of car regular also helps you can pick up broken underseal rusty patches etc and can remerdy before it gets out of hand, my old MK2 was still going strong 12 years untill an uninsured driver wrtote it off we now have a mk3 and will be starting the checks myself this year as it's nearly out of warranty

Diesel filters should be changed every year it's a lot cheaper than replacing the injectors or pump £35 for a filter, pump and injectors arnd £1200

Always with servicing and maintenance many start with one of the least important parts of the car.  Priority should always be given to brakes, steering and suspension (all three included tyres) then on to visibility (see and be seen, lights, wipers, glass, number plates, etc.) and safety electrics (wipers, heater blower, horn, hazards, etc.). 

 

I go along with what Murdockman has put plus a forgotten but important air filter, if you're looking at and the spark plugs every two years you might as well renew the air filter at the same time.

 

I'd also look at changing the gearbox oil on a manual box particularly as it's so easy.

 

Also look after your battery and main cables and connections, keep the battery from getting too low charge and all cable and wire connections clean, secure and protected.  If you're going to be doing a lot of short journeys, say under15- 20 miles, and very few much longer journeys then you might want to consider buying an appropriate battery charger or maintenance charger.

 

As put before don't overlook the tyres even if they have plenty of tread above the legal minimum (which is only really good in dry warm weather) tyres get hard with age and/or lack of use and can deteriorate particularly if the vehicle is kept outside and as I put tyres are an important part of the vehicle's braking, and steering and suspension.

 

The most important things to keep clean (and clear) are windows, lights and number plates.
