2.0TSI 220 DSG oil change schedule

Recommended Posts

Hey folks.

I have a 2.0TSI 220 DSG. MY understanding from the vague 'maintenance' infographic supplied by skoka that the DSG oil should be replaced at 4/yrs or 40k miles.  I'm at the 4 year mark but only on 22k miles.  The dealer is telling me to wait until 40k until we change it. They are however, wanting to do spark plugs, which I would have thought are far less less likely to be needing changing.

Can anyone confirm this is the correct advice? (Forgive my cynicism, but I've had a very poor experience with a couple of Skoda dealers so far, but this one I haven't used.)  I will be using a local specialist as soon as the extended warranty and servicing vouchers expire. Just want to be sure I'm doing the right thing at the 4 year point.

Thanks

Good morning Graphic, I'd take a guess that your cynicism is warranted - iirc plugs are good for >> 22K miles. I'd be more concerned to get the DSG serviced properly - including cleaning the filter strainer that a lot of dealers claim is 'not necessary'!

+1 for your past poor experiance with dealers, although I also had an issue with my last service at a 'Specialist'

Thanks.  I guess what I'm trying to establish is what is considered 'proper' servicing of the DSG. I could frankly do without the cost at the moment, but would much rather do my preventative maintenance properly. My trust in the dealer network is near zero unfortunately.

I'd guess that a slight period extension (but not the <> three years the dealer appears to be suggesting for the DSG oil change) in getting service items checked-off will not hurt - but taking the **** on the plugs.

I wonder if the pollen filter has ever been changed during past services ?

The DSG oil change is not a 4 year thing.  40,000 miles and some are now said by VW Skoda as each 80,000.

It’s a specific type of dry clutch that it only due at 80k, his will be a wet clutch so 40k

when you say filter strainer what are you referring to? There is no filter strainer on a DQ250 gearbox?

you have a cartridge filter and that is all.

I believe is a DQ250 (5 speed wet box). The engine is the CHHB 2.0L TSI 220 BHP.  I just want to make sure I'm doing the right things at the right time. It always amazes me how difficult it is to fine definitive information on such matters.

It will be a DQ250 with a 40,000 mile interval, there is no timescale on this.

a service on this involves a filter, copper washer and an oil change.

that is everything that’s needed to know.

and last thing; main dealers are subsidised to make the price near enough impossible for independents to compete with so it’s normally worth a dealer doing it for £200 and change

I changed my haldex oil at 16k and nearly  2yrs old. I will be doing my DSG this year at short of 3yrs old, with around 21k on it.
I have a habit though of moving service items up my own list depending on how important I believe some preventative maintenance will preserve the part in question. From memory, I believe the 381 box is 80,000 miles rather than the 40,000 recommended for yours, which seems to cause some confusion at times.
The plugs in my 2.0tsi (272) had a silly service interval, but I’m not in front of the service system, so can’t look it up. Think it was either 60k or 80k. I do however remember making a mental note in my little overkill brain to change them every 4yrs.

@ApertureS Thank you, this is very clear, thanks.  As it's not booked in, I'll likely do it on next year's service which should be approaching but shy of 40k.

@UndertheRadar First I've heard of changing the 'haldex' (I assume pump?) oil. I'm at 4 years and 23k, is it of significant value to change the DSG oil at this point in you view/experience? I was expecting to be doing it but was talked out of it by the service centre!

@roottoot Good to know.  The car came with two services included (oil changes, basically), of which this is the first.  Unless Undertheradar talks me out of it, I'll probably get it done on the next one based on the information here. Inclinded to use my local VW specialist after that as they always served me well on the old Bimmer.

Don’t start throwing spanner’s in the works by mentioning haldex people... haldex is 4wd system and is completely independent of the gearbox.

this has its own service procedure and items and periods.

I doubt yours is 4wd seen as it’s 220 tsi

That makes more sense now!  No, front wheel only as it's the lowly 220 tsi variant.

Sorry. Never thought you had a haldex, was just making the point that with my own vehicle I am more inclined to over service those items than let them run on or even make it to manufacturers recommended intervals, given the number of early failures I see on a daily basis.
I’d take the 4yrs/40,000 as whichever comes first. Not, if it hasn’t made it to 40,000 by 4yrs, run it on until it does.
the cost of an oil change versus a mechatronic (worse case) makes the servicing look reasonable.
that’s the principle and basis for most of my mechanical reasonings. Cost to replace versus cost to maintain. Even my oil changes have been doubled. Now every 6months still with the best of oil used.
Is it overkill? Probably yes!!

But if I do have a mechanical failure of some description, at least I know it couldn’t be prevented and was going to fail anyway.
Everyone has their own ideas on maintenance, but I would at the very least, recommend, meeting the recommended interval for the box regardless of low mileage.

So Off Topic.     The Haldex is @30,000 miles / 3 years or sooner for those with it.  And Skoda had it at 40,000 mile back a few years back while VW/ Seat and Audi dealers were already at the 30,000 miles.   IMPORTANT,. Is those with a VAQ front diff.  Many many cars have not had the VAQ serviced at 3 years / 30,000 as Serviced Desk staff are not aware they should be.  The Techs should be..  the printed sheet should have it showing as due.

Skoda simplified this too much.

Main dealers were charging the same £269 then £289 for a Major Service @ 4 years / 40,000 miles even when they never replaced Spark Plugs or Air Filter because the Tech decided, usually without looking.  That was actually fraud as far as i was concerned.  Charging for parts and VAT for Labour or Parts and none provided.

Hands up - confusing DSG with Haldex!

This is the chart I have, which by my reading says to do the DSG at 4 years even if it hasn't reach 40k?
