Battery replacement/upgrade?

Featured Replies

What battery should I get to replace my current one? Can I upgrade it?

2013 Rapid 1.2 tsi (105) elegance green tech (stop/start)

Read the labels on the current one. Probably 096 or 096AGM. 120-ish from Tayna for a decent AGM. Unconvinced about upgrading (unless you have good reasons involving almost all short journeys (and even then a monthly tickle on charge will solve that)). Standard 096 86-ish.

Check the dimensions (length, width, and height) of your current battery.

The width is usually 175mm, and the height is usually 190mm. However, the length varies depending on what size is fitted.

Different Sizes

The 242mm length is a size 2 battery.

The 278mm length is a size 3 battery.

The 315mm length is a size 4 battery.

As you can see from the above, as you go up each size the length goes up by about 1.5" (38mm). This makes it easy to determine what size you have got.

Sometimes the next "size" up is cheaper due to present usage/demand, that was the way it was when I bought a new battery for my wife's 2015 VW Polo 1.2TSI - but remember if you choose to do that, check that the battery tray can handle the next size up, VW Polo at least, use a different battery tray for each of the battery sizes - though I think that you could possibly just cut the raised lip off at one end and let the battery slightly overhang or maybe just sit on top of where that raised lip was.

Edit:- that 2015 VW Polo 1.2TSI (16V) 110PS came from factory with a 027 size battery which is 59Ah and 242mm long, I am replacing that with a slightly cheaper 096 size battery which is 70Ah and is 278mm long and is an AGM - that was my choice at the time of organising getting hold of a replacement battery, probably overkill - as usual!

Sadly went to kwikfit when it needed replacing last time as they were the only place open at the time. So I’m not convinced I have the right one in there… it’s an AGM but 027?

other Rapid owners seem to have gone for 027 AGM batteries (Tayna's database has the Rapids as like the one I owned in the 80s).

I have their Enduroline battery on my car and it's been fit and forget but my car doesn't have all the VW (over-complicated, I wonder why) computer programs.

Enduroline 027 AGM

Capacity (C20): 60 Ah - CCA (EN): 680 A - Length: 242 mm - Guarantee: 5 Years

https://www.tayna.co.uk/car-batteries/types/027-agm/

New figures are fine but it's how long the battery can sustain keeping close to those figures and how reliably, generally the bigger the battery the more it holds..

096 AGM - Length: 278 mm- https://www.tayna.co.uk/car-batteries/types/096-agm/

So your car is a 2013 car, ie 9 years old and it has "used" 2 batteries in that time, first one would have been an EFB and the last one was an AGM, I'd expect a lot longer than 9 years to have "used" 2 batteries - though maybe that AGM battery from Kwikfit was not "good" quality, I wonder if Kwikfit recoded that car for having an AGM battery, just curious about that last bit.

Hi rum4mo,

I have a 2015 VW Polo 1.2TSI 90PS which came with the same battery size as yours. Do you have the part number for the upgraded 096 battery tray? Have you installed the new battery yet, if so were there any probems?

Thanks.

Hi, I have still not changed anything as the original battery is still able to support that car, and I don't really want an extra "still usable" old battery laying around in the garage!

Parts bought:- Battery tray(BRACKET) changed for VW Group p/n 6C0 915 321D to suit the bigger frame size battery and insulator(BATT CASE) changed to 5Q0 915 411E – both already bought, managed to eventually get out to the garage, but not fitted yet.

I planned to at least get trays swopped over this summer while I had the front moved out to have a look at the other side of the AC condenser - but the recent seriously hot spell of weather forced me to get the AC recharged to keep my wife quiet!
