8,000 miles and needs oil?

Featured Replies

Just had a warning to add max 0.25gal of oil and looking at the manual it looks like it’s normal? I’ve never had to add oil between services in my Passat! And one know what oil for 2l diesel?

To VW508 00 / 509 00  So that will be 0w 20 FS IV.                 (it could be VW 504 00 / 507 00 if you use what VW Group recommended before going to te latest recommendation.)

Which manual?

The one that says the same for every engine and has for decades. May use 0.5 litres in 1,000 km (621 miles)

May use more in the first 5,000 km.

Is that a 1/4 of a US Gallon or an Imperial one?  That is not a serious question.

When did you last check the oil, and have you checked it since collecting the car?

Owners manuals can have arse covering stuff like possible oil use, but then checking oil with new cars is 'Simply Clever', and responsible as a driver

No, I haven’t checked it since having it. Clearly haven’t read a manual either 😳

I know that modern petrols burn some oil, strange that a diesel does it too, that's something I would not expect.

Engines do tend to use some oil during the 'running in' period. It may not have been full at the point of purchase, it isn't unheard off.

Either top it up yourself and monitor the consumption, or pop into the dealer and ask them to do it, at least it will be on their records then should you find an issue further down the line.

@zetzetI am surprised that you are surprised that a TDI might use oil.

That is why there are lots of people that ask on here and on social media what oil they should buy to top up the engine oil in TSI's and TDI's.

Lots post that they think their new or used car has used too much oil even though they had no idea how much oil the vehicle had in when they got it.

That is why Engines have not got a sealed oil filler cap so that drivers need not top up between services.

All engines will burn small amounts of oil. 1 litre of oil for 8000 miles is perfectly fine. And that is assuming the last service had the oil to the max level and not in the middle somewhere.

I have traditionally (as in the last 40 odd years) checked the oil level when the engine has stood for a good time allowing it drain into the sump, and is cold. Seem to recall reading somewhere (which I now can’t find) that I should check the level when it’s warm, i.e. only about 5 or 10 minutes after parking up.

Thoughts?

It dose say in the manual that the engine should be warm.

@sneal. Read the owners manual maybe.  Do not check your oil when warm,. That was Skoda and lost in translation that had WARM.  Only 1.2 44kW VW engines are checked cold.   All other VW engines for over a decade are checked at Normal Operating Temperature.   Or should be and dealerships staff should know that   Skoda say 'after a few minutes' that is after stopping. Not 5 - 10 minutes of a cold engine started and idling. They do not say 5 or 10 or any specific time after stopping.  But a few is just a few. As is not long.  Do it consistent though if you care.   Especially if people where checking when refueling a few is only a few minutes.  But simply clever Is know where cold is as that is what people checking before a trip will b we checking to see if there is enough oil.

???

Has she got the engine running?   'Simply clever'  or not, SKODA!

Checked mine yesterday a few minutes after parking up on the drive. 1/4ltr added bringing it to the top of Zone B as indicated in the diagram @roottoot shared earlier. Bottle now stashed safely in the boot as I’ll be on the road a lot - 3000 [mostly motorway] miles in 3 weeks coming up (and a second mortgage for the fuel 😂).

Going back to earlier mention of diesels and oil consumption, when I took delivery of my then new 2012 Octy 2 1.6TDi the dealer included a 1ltr top-up bottle of Castrol. Ran the car for 80k miles, the bottle is still in the cupboard with 500ml left in it. Shame it’s the wrong grade for the modern TSI I now have.

The litre from 2012 should be VW 504 00 / 507 00, 5w 30 FS III.

That is fine for a bit of a top up of a TSI if it came from the factory with VW 508 00 / 509 00 so 0w 20 FS IV.

That is if the car was due for an oil and filter change in the near future, otherwise best not mix specs.

Thanks.

I decided to get a bottle of VW 508 00/509 00 0w20 FS IV for the Mk4 TSI; amazingly thin, which is, I guess, part of the low friction, low emission initiatives. I won't be wasting the older bottle as it'll go fine in the other car.

My VRS Diesel needed a Quart, no mention of Litres, strange measurement had to Google how may Litres it was 😀 this was on around 10k
