Off road wheels and tyres

Featured Replies

I have a set of  VW Tiguan Montana alloys on my 280 in the winter. They are the exact fit and offset (7Jx17 ET40) for the Superb on 17" with the approved 215/55/17 tire size. No problems clearing the brakes.

When I bought them they had the tyres for the tiguan, 215/65/17 and I tried to fit them as an experiment..... I know mine isnt a Scout but they rubbed the mudflaps and nearly the front of the arch too when I dropped it off the jack onto its wheels.

I would be temped to try 215/60/17 in your case and hope you have enough clearance.

Outside diameter

215/65R17 711.3mm

235/55R17 690.3mm

215/55R17 668.3mm

Therefore, 215/65R17 has an outside diameter 6.4% bigger than 215/55R17, and 3.0% bigger than the oversize 235/55R17. I'm not surprised they rubbed.

215/65R17 is a Kodiaq sized tyre.

Haha, yes I never intended to drive it like that. I had to remove my 19"s for a couple of days and preferred putting these on rather than leaving the car on stands. They were summer tyres and were promptly sold. The 215/55/17 on 7J ET40 wheels are as big as you can go if you want to be able to fit chains.

It slightly reminded me of Clarkson's offroad Bentley with those tyres on it though, enough to make you do a double take if you walked past it.

I quite like the Tiguan wheels on mine, they look ok and I have now managed to source some Skoda centre caps in the larger VW size too from Ali-express. Any Skoda 17" wheel with appropriate offset will fit but these came along cheap and Tiguans wheels also had the correct ET40 offset for the Superb. I personally would start by trying either a 215/60/17 for maximum side wall or 225 or 235/55/17 if the 60 profile doesn't fit. Hopefully you can can find a tyre shop that will help you check for clearance before you have to put your hand in your pocket too deeply.

Let us know how you get on. If Skoda UK had decided to sell the Superb Scout in the Uk I would have had one in a heart beat but for some reason all they want to sell here are bloody SUVs. Even the Octavia Scout is no longer available other than to emergency services I believe.

Thanks for the reply, I don't need chains for this trip, just a tough high sidewall tyre. I'm very happy with the superb Scout, it's quicker than my old V6 (but doesn't sound as good) I like the slight increase in ground clearance and bash plates, it's the perfect car for me, quick, quiet and comfortable on most roads, with usually enough off-road ability for where I go, I'll hire a Prado/lancruiser if I need more ability. I'll generally run the 19s and swap in 17s for rougher trips, at this stage I'll probably get some 215/55/17s tyre shops are reluctant to go outside the placard

As a follow up to those who are following, I bought a set of used Yeti wheels (7J x 17) ET45 which have 215/55/17 M+S tyres with a 98W load rating.

I'll go up a size when I've worn these out, I've haven't gained any more clearance but these will do the job for now, tougher, higher sidewall with the benefit of a slightly softer ride.

I've tried them out on a few offroad tracks and they handle ruts and potholes much better but also give me a lot more confidence on that sort of terrain.

I've put the 19s back on for now as they are vastly superior on regular roads especially in the wet

I've now put 3000kms on the Scout with the 215/55/17 wheels. I did a trip around the Flinders Ranges in the North of South Australia.

The car performed beautifully, giving me a softer ride with a much more durable tyre/sidewall.

The scouts weakest point off road is it's ride height, but one of the reasons I bought it was it's on road ability and safety which included it not being too high. such is the nature of compromises.

A superb scout with adjustable height suspension would probably be my ideal car.

This trip took me over a lot of dirt roads, many creek crossings which were often quite rough and some mild 4wd tracks,

The car was loaded with 4 people and luggage with 2 full size spares on a roof rack as it is quite remote in parts up there.

I also had the front of the car covered in a paint protection film/wrap, which appears to have done a great job in protecting from stone chips, The factory side protection pieces also seem to have a good job in protecting the car

That's odd as I have 17" wheels which fit.

Is yours a 4WD?????? same model as OP's

The smallest wheel size that will clear the 340mm front discs on your 2021 Skoda Superb Scout is 18 inches 17s are unlikely to fit due to caliper clearance Stick to 18x8 ET44 5x112 571mm center bore which is the same as many VW Audi wheels Suitable off-road tyre sizes include 225/55R18 or 235/55R18

Thats a strange comment daroya, since Aussiev6, the OP, reported 2 years ago in the post just above, of his successful 3000km trip using 17 inch wheels.
