Sat nav not able to find its exact location?

Featured Replies

..just had the car back from the garage who replaced a faulty wheel sensor. I am aware it is purely coincidence, but when I started to use the satnav the location shown was not exactly where the car was. (ie it kept showing "off road" on the dashboard). Also the indicator on the map remained still for a bit abd then "jumped" to the current location and then froze for a few seconds before jumping to the (almost) current location?

ie it seems to know roughly where it is, but seems to be a small amount out and only updates every few seconds?

Just wondering if anybody may know what this faukt would be caused by? (I tried turning everything off and removing and re-inserting the SD card).

Thanks for any feedback...

Faulty aerial?

We had that issue along with the navagated to destination being anywhere within 10 miles of the car, this was all at approx 3 years old, despite the dealer doing several head unit firmware upgrades/resets/drinking coffee and staring at it with purpose. It also had a replacement antenna, it was eventually resolved by replacing the Amundsen II headunit.

Luckily we had reported it just before our 3rd year service, so Skoda Warranty paid for it as it had been several weeks before a resolution was found.

Fingers crossed it just the antenna as I guess all Yeti's are out of warranty now.🤞

..ta for the replies....dumb question, I assume the antenna is used for both the radio and satnav?

Yeah, I believe the stubby on the roof does DAB, and GPS, I believe the AM/FM utilises the heated rear window ... but I'm sure someone will confirm.

Heated rear window does the FM radio - I had a rear screen replaced and in error a screen with two connections was used and radio reception was dreadful. Screen replaced with one with three connections and all was well again.

My car doesn't have the fitted sat-nav so I use a Garmin unit that combines sat-nav with a dash cam but this post caught my eye because at the moment on one road I drive almost daily the "car" is shown to be maybe 50m to the north of where it should be, running through dense woodland!. Before I join this road everything is fine and when I leave it the "car" jumps back to the correct location. What makes it even weirder is it seems to be a seasonal thing! Whether it has anything to do with the trees coming into leaf but then why only on this road?

Ah, don't you just long for the old days and paper maps with your navigator turning them in all sorts of directions in a bid to try and avoid saying "turn left" when there's onlya junction on the right.....

Hi

Satnav systems work out their position using a number of orbiting satellites.  The fewer the satellites they can receive, and the weaker their signals, the more error there is in the calculated position.  The software takes the position and then "assumes" that you are on the nearest road (as long as there is one closer than say 50 metres), so snaps the "car" symbol onto the road. Most of the time this works so well that you are unaware of it.

However, anything that significantly reduces the number of satellites that can be "seen" can give noticable problems, especially at complex junctions or where two roads run in parallel. Driving in a steeply banked cutting will hide satellites low in the sky.  Driving under heavy tree cover (especially with wet leaves) will weaken signals.  And of course, a faulty GPS antenna or a fault with its cabling or power supply can cause problems.

Past posters have reported problems with the roof mounted combined GPS/Radio antenna due to water ingress.  Alternatively there could be a hardware or software problem with the head unit.

Heated rear window does the FM radio

If that is so then why does my base spec model (no built in sat nav) have a roof mounted antenna?

There are other bands.
PS: I thought the rear window element did the DAB, like the window stick on aerial used with DAB adapters.

Mine too, if I remove the antenna for a car wash there is no radio reception.

I can only tell you what happened with mine - original rear screen FM/AM radio was fine, first replacement screen with two connectors radio reception was dreadful, with second, three connection screen everything was back to normal. Other than changing the screen nothing else was done to the car so to me that says the rear screen must play a part in FM/AM reception.

Urrell, my Yeti is pre=FL and doesn't have DAB.

Hi

Fitments vary, but on my 2012 car which has no DAB or Satnav, FM reception uses both the "bee sting" roof antenna and the heated screen.  The radio tuner switches quickly to whichever is giving the best reception at any time, a process called diversity.  It's certainly the best FM reception of any car I have owned, so I have never felt the urge to fit DAB.

For technical reasons, DAB doesn't benefit nearly so much from diversity so only uses the roof antenna, as far as I'm aware.
