I had to do a trip earlier in the week from home to Doncaster and back. It was one of those journeys you have to do because you have to, not because you want to. As I was being paid per mile, I thought I'd see just how high I could get the MPG - my car is 1.6 GLXi. The outward run was 48.2 and return 46.3 - not bad for a car of the Octy's size. I found that trying to keep an eye on the trip computer actually made driving much harder than normal, so its not something I'll be doing anytime soon. Normal mpg for this kind of trip would be around 42. so the extra mpg wasn't really worth the effort.

Lol, I've done that before... gone really easy, cruised at around 60, tried to savour every last drop. And.. I gained 2mpg. 40 instead of 38 :(

So, now I dont bother, I just put me foot down, at the end of the day you're only saving a few quid and it's worth paying it IMO.

I had to do Conventry and back (from Weymouth) on Monday.... I averaged 58.8mpg (according to the total mileage and fuel used). This was a works trip, so I was being paid mileage money and travel time.

That said I went to Boscombe Down yesterday and got a puncture - smahed glass in the road - there goes all my profie from the coventry trip :-(

If I drive like a granny, which I do when being paid mileage and keep to 70 mph, I get 60 mpg+.

But if I drive at normal motaway speeds , I get more like 50 mpg.

i am using the 110TDI as well. Oh yes... granny mode works so well when the company is paying :-) No point loosing my license when driving for work!

Ouch - did a granny run to devon recently and scraped up to about 39 mpg - can't get higher than that in mine. Average 30mpg on my work trips (8 mile each way stop-start hilly roads around Bath). Octy I vRS

did a run down to Gatwick a few weeks ago and saw an all time motorway cruising high of 38mpg, that was at my normal motorway speeds as well (nothing too silly of course).

Saying that since having the throttle body replaced the mpg has improved for all journeys inc town driving to and from work. i saw 35mpg the other day which i've only previously seen on a long run.

total mileage from the full tank after the gatwick run was around 420 miles.

i'm in a mk1 vRS as well.

i did cardiff to gatwick recently 4 in the car and suitcase's and got 39.9 mpg doing just about 80 mph all the way

went to york this weekend 4 of us again not so much baggage driving a bit quicker and got 30 mpg

round town in work i get about 22-24 mpg

but company pays for all fuel so not too worried except the odd dressing down everynow and then about fuel costs but hey a free oct vrs and all costs is worth it

I recently did Dumfies & Galloway and back to Bradford in my Mk1 Octy VRS and had 41mgpg there and 42 mpg on the way back.

Mixture of motorway and twisty A road, where the ocassional boot passed bank holiday traffic was required.

However, I do find that the fuel i use effects this considerably. This trip was with Optimax.

I recently tried Sainsburys super (allegedly BP Ultimate) and only managed to get 37mpg, and have had similar results with Esso super also.

i get the best results using BP Ultimate where MPG is concerned but the car runs and feels better using Optimax.

EVO recently did a fairly comprehensive fuel test and found Optimax the best for all round ability and BP Ultimate best for bhp output.

I saw something the other day claiming that slowing down by 10mph saves 4p a mile. I ran those figures on a ~200 mile trip I do fairly regularly, and came up with the figures that, not allowing for the faster journey time saving me a lunch stop, I'd effectively be working on my day off for £8 an hour. Forget that!

Bradford to Bridlington return averaged 35.9 mpg steady indicated 75 cc m-way and a road driving 30 - xx not bad for new vRS with only 200 miles on clock!
