SOS went Ape

Featured Replies

Over past few days drove to London and back. SOS suddenly threw wobbly followed by Sat Nav which wanted to send me to Ostend and finally settled on trying to calculate a journey between three locations in the Solway Firth. It cleared every time I stopped for a while, ie overnight or lunch stop but eventually went bananas again. Is there a known fix?

Welcome.

There will be a fix eventually.  There have been already and yet people still have the fault.

But then Dealership staff will possibly tell you

'Never heard of that before', others will say,

'They all do that and we will contact the factory'.

Then there is 'The Factory are launching a software update.     Loads of threads in various sections of this and other forums on the issue.

The Dealership Master Tech and the Workshop Manager should know the story even if the Service Desk receptionist does not.

I had my SOS module replaced in March after getting a message on speedo screen that the SOS functionality had stopped working. I had the message for a whole day but didn't get it again for weeks. Dealer looked at it and said module needed replacing and there was also a software update. Module wasn't available in December when they diagnosed it and waited till March for them to get one.

Since the new module and the update I have had 'SOS call activated' appear a couple of times but only for a few seconds.

Shockingly if you had to pay for the module they are over £900 +vat. Lot of money for something that is probably just a chip. You can buy a mobile phone for less than £20 for comparison.

But the SOS module is more than a mobile 'phone in what it does.  If your car crashes and the airbags are activated, the SOS module reports the incident and your vehicle's position direct to the emergency services, something you can't do if you're unconscious, for example, or you are in a "dead" spot for your mobile.

And how does the SOS module communicate when its in a dead spot?

I struggle to believe that any SOS message from a VAG vehicle would elicit any response from the emergency services after crying wolf so many times.

In a previous life in a previous century I ran a burglar alarm company, Police respnse could only be gained from an alarm activation if it was a system installed by a company on the Police approved list & the signal went first to a central monitoring station, latterly all activations had to be verified by a secondary sensor activation and/or audio/video.

Even with all the above if there were more than 2 false alarms within 12 months the Police response would be withdrawn, VAG and Skoda must have sent through thousands of false emergency SOS messages.

My comparison to a mobile phone was in relation to the prices of each.  I have a smart phone which cost less than £200 and does vastly more than the SOS module for a fifth of the price.

It only sends sos alert when the airbags are deployed and not randomly or when you press the button

There certainly are UK vehicles that call 999 when the SOS button is pressed which is why some have it disabled so that passengers left in a car might not press it when trying things out.

?

Does the system in a Kamiq not also ring 999 when the button is pushed if enabled and operating correctly?

And that is after their best efforts to fix it, were I to look further back in the thread I'm sure there would be countless other experiences related.

Its a gimmick anyway IMNSVHO to appeal to the terminally anxious, I bet the UK Police have never and would never respond to an unverified automatic SOS call generated from a vehicle.

I would still like to know if & how the system could send an SOS call (to be ignored) from a "dead" spot for the mobile network it uses.

This is from the "book"-

Availability of a mobile network is indispensable for
establishing a connection to the emergency number.
WARNING
This emergency service is only available in some
countries.
WARNING
If the vehicle is located in an area without a functioning
emergency call system infrastructure, no vehicle
data shall be transmitted to the emergency call centre.
After the start of the conversation, the emergency
call centre also contains information as to the accident
location and the severity of the accident, the
number of occupants with seatbelts on and the vehicle
identification number (VIN).
Once the connection has been established, communication
with the emergency call centre takes place
via the loudspeaker and microphone installed in the
vehicle.
Personal data
Personal customer data is collected, processed and
used by ŠKODA AUTO in accordance with the provisions
of the generally binding legal provisions in the
area of personal data protection.
The current declaration on the protection of personal
data can be found on the following website:
https://www.skoda-auto.com/other/personal-data.

Serious accident - automatic call
In the event of an accident where the airbag or belt
tensioner activates, a call is automatically started
with the emergency call centre.

Minor accident - call option
The Infotainment screen displays the option to set
up a connection to the emergency call centre or
breakdown service.

Manual call
› Keep the key pressed
down.
› Confirm the connection
to the emergency
call centre in the Infotainment
screen.
› To cancel the connection
to the emergency
call centre before
starting the call, press
the button again or
confirm the cancellation of the connection in the
Infotainment screen.
Starting a manual conversation can then be used, for
example, if you also report an accident in which you
are not directly involved.

Indicator light
The system state is displayed
after the ignition
is switched on by the
warning light A illuminating.
▶ Green - lit up - the system
is functional.
▶ Green - flashing - a call
is being made to the
emergency call centre.
▶ Red - lit up - there is a system failure, immediately
seek the help of a specialist garage.
▶ Not lit up - the system is out of order due to a long
term unavailable mobile network, if this circumstance
persists, the system will require the assistance
of a specialist garage.
WARNING
If there is a system fault, no emergency call is possible

My scala started with the intermittent sos error in early December, they looked at in late December ordered the "back up battery" it went in on Friday morning to get fixed, they couldn't get it to work " so we're in communication with the factory" on Friday afternoon/ Monday, then decided it needs a new module, which has just arrived.

The first thing I think I'll do when fixed is sell it, I bought the skoda for reliability in december, but its been faulty for 5 months out of the 8 I have had it and god knows how much this would have cost me after the warrenty runs out.

I have just had an Error SOS, luckily returning from a journey and a couple of cars lengths from my home.

I have left it and now there is no message and a steady green light by the SOS button.

Mine started like that after a few days was constant, I think most seem to self resolve.
