Using the OBD Eleven to change car battery

Featured Replies

I wish to change the AGM battery on my Superb Mk111 MY16.  I have bought a Bosch S5A08 AGM battery.  I gather that the Battery Management System requires to be re-coded.  I have an OBD Eleven.  Is there anyone out there that can give me a step by step guide as to re-coding this battery?  And what steps are essential and what are not.  (Battery serial number?)  Thank you in advance.

Cancel this request.  I have sussed out the method and now my battery management system is correctly updated.

Any chance you'd be willing to share what you did so that anyone else looking to do the same knows?

I am not ignoring this request to share how I did it. It's just that I cannot repeat the process sat here on my desktop with my mobile adjacent.  Maybe I need to "connect" to my car.  I recall a few things.  I had to find Battery adaptation, live data and then I had to ensure that I updated the new battery's power rating i.e. 70Ah (it was previously 68Ah), change the serial number (it didn't have to be accurate, just change the existing one by one digit, (it was 1111111111.  I changed it to 1111111112.) Then before I could "write" the data the OBD Eleven made me pay and upgrade to the Pro version.  I think it was £29.99. There was no way that I could confirm that my process did anything but having researched all this and also spoke to a good garage owner who was a Bosch Service Centre expert he confirmed that the values I updated were essential.  Doing it correctly will prolong the battery's life because the Battery Management System will better manage the battery, ensuring it gets the correct charge from the alternator.

If I can, I will "connect" the device to the car and try and repeat the process and update on here.

I'm watching with interest. I normally change car batteries myself as they are relatively easy however I've never changed a battery that requires coding before.

My battery is fine at the moment but I know how quickly they can go down hill so am considering my options this year. I was going to buy a Bosch S5A08 for £130 and fit myself but then I've either got to pay to have it coded or buy the coding equipment.

Alternatively I could buy a Halfords 096AGM battery which is actually a Yuasa YBX9096 battery for £200 supplied, fitted and coded.

I'll probably do a bit more research before deciding on the best option.

I had Halfords replace my AGM battery in March (EFB096) fitted and coded for £150.

I had my wife's Fabia Mk3 replacement Bosch S5A05 battery, from Tayna, coded by someone using an OBD Eleven, as has been said the Ah rate and one digit change to serial number is required and if changing from EFB to AGM too.

The factory three character coding for the original (Moll?) battery was 'JCB' which I think can be kept as the computer doesn't care and I can't see it mattering to the computer program but ours was changed to 'BOSCH' which isn't three characters and Bosch is just a brand label stuck on the battery anyway, I'm told the battery is actually a Varta.

I was also told that 'fleece' is the correct term for the AGM battery type and not 'AGM', ours was input with a capital 'F' as in 'Fleece' rather than all lower case but I've no idea if this makes any difference.

The battery has been fitted for 11 months now on a car that does a lot of short journeys and everything seems fine but when I borrow a higher level scan tool for other coding I might change from 'BOSCH' to 'JCB' to keep the factory three character code and have 'fleece' all in lower case and see if either makes any difference.

VW seem to have made all their computer programs over-complicated, interconnected, and with the battery system particularly, intrusive, perhaps it was practice and cover for the dieselgate cheating.

Sorry to make things as clear as mud but it seems the way with VW.

Wow, £150 in March and £200 in May 😬

This is good value, 5 Guarantee too (and money off at the present time), I've had their Enduroline battery on my car for over 5 years now and it's been fine. - https://www.tayna.co.uk/car-batteries/enduroline/096-agm/

For all those that want to recharge the battery in a great hurry note the Yuasa recommended their YBX9096 battery is charged at 4 amps.

I have bought exactly the same battery from Tayna as in post above. Anybody can tell me please, what shortname/code of manufacturer I have to code with OBD? It is Enduroline. Does it even matter what comp code Is there saved?

Just code it as JCB, the computer won't know any different or care as long as you have the type of battery correct, alter the battery capacity (ah) as required and alter the serial number (change the last 1 to 2) the computer will be satisfied.
