All,

Struggling to get hold of the stuff without paying over the odds. Apparently it’s discontinued and something is coming along to replace it, no idea what.

So what on earth are people with service needs supposed to do in the meantime?

I used to use LL3 a long time ago mainly to reduce the different oils in the garage, all cars are annually serviced or 10k . Now the car is a high miler 256k also, It sounds better and burns less, plus cheaper. 
 

Any ideas where to get it from ?

That's the stuff my Fabia takes too, IIRC. Can't seem to find it, so I think you're right.

I heard it going to be replaced next month no other details yet.

I've got a carton... errr box of 5w40 stuff for my oil and filter replacement tomorrow. So I'll be fine till next May.

ASDA / Tesco or other places will sell 5w 40 to VW 502 00/ 505 00/ 505 01 at cheap enough prices.  (often on clearance as used to beat other supermarkets price promise.)

Proper oil produced by oil producers for Multi National Retailers just like any named brands.

I think it’s another version they do to meet VAG needs

VW group changed their classification not that long ago, so that oils for diesels and petrols are more segregated than previously  

Platinum 5W40 went from 502 00/ 505 00/ 505 01 to just 505 00/ 505 01.

Don't know if what's in it changed at all though.

I remember looking at the approved oil lists back when I first spotted this, znd there was just one oil left that was approved to all 3 of those specs.

 

Not sure why the change, maybe just to further obfuscate and baffle potential DIYers about what oil they are actually supposed to use in their own cars.
