It is possible to get tyres with good grip and low rolling resistance, but you don't get that for free, and ultimately, they won't grip as well as proper  grippy tyres.

I found the OEM Turanza 001 tyres to be surprisingly grippy, given their low rolling resistance.

But then they fell apart after 4 years. :D

The Goodyear Assym 6's I've got now are grippy, but they're sticky, and even slow speed car park driving (10-15mph) gives my car a light pebbled-ash, as bits of grit and whatever are picked up by the tyres and flick off onto the car.

Also, they're not as good in the wet as reviews suggest, and I suspect they will be awful in snowy conditions.

They're good in the dry, mind, but I really want great wet conditions performance, and they're okay, but not quite as good as I'd like.

That said, they are pretty quiet, which I love!

  • @EnterName   Best you study a bit more or just read the Owners Manual on GPF's because they are not the same as a DPF.

  • Every TSI benefits from getting Spirited driving occasionally.  Actually a roasting. Engine oil up to temp to be sure condensation is getting a clear out, all well and then the oil hot the spark

Thirdly, I am still running the original, albeit slightly disintegrating, Bridgestone Turanza 001 tyres which have a pretty low rolling resistance, and I have inflated them to the economy pressures as specified under the fuel filler flap.

Fourthly, I run my car on Super unleaded (97RON), which helps fuel economy.

Fifthly, when I had my car remapped, I told the tuner I wanted the same or better economy on low throttle demand and about 230PS peak power, which is a fairly modest boost to peak power.

All these factors together give me decent economy, though I'm pretty sure driving economically has the biggest impact. The auto box helps me drive economically IMO, as I can concentrate on light throttle control and don't have to think about the gears at all. However it does call for some restraint and thought, and I'm sure it's not a driving style that would suit most people.

I do enjoy a blast around now and then, but it's not something I do often.

Sixthly, the Gen3B runs on 0W/20 oil, which is thinner than the oil specified for 220 and 230 vRS engines, IIRC. I think the 245 has 0W/20 specified for it, though.

All these little factors add up to help MPG.

I'm getting 38-39MPG on regular unleaded, measured via same pump cut-off and trip mileage, so after a couple of refills, I'm going back to super unleaded.

As far as I'm concerned, the benefits of 97+RON outweigh the possible saving in cost, and I'm not convinced there's a cost saving to be had.

As fuel increases in price, the 10p difference in price between the two fuels (where I buy mine) will make any cost saving even less significant.

Oh well, it was worth a try, and now I know.

Of course now I have to do a similar check for Super unleaded, as my car was reading a little over 40mpg over the test period, having reset the long-term MPG.

So as some of you have suggested, the in car figures really aren't worth a lot.

Now I know that, too.

My car's engine seems to be loosening-up nicely.

I think a 60MPG run might actually be possible, given I had a bit of a blast on a section of road on this journey, which spoilt my otherwise economic driving. (aided by a fair few sections with a 50MPH speed limit.)

That's very impressive indeed 👍

Over 35k miles, my Golf (EA888G3 230 with DQ250) averages about 34mpg.  We saw 66mpg over a ten mile stint in Switzerland, but that was once, and then the same coming downhill out of the Dolomites into Italy.  Neither to be seen again, and not a chance around my neck of the woods.

Hey Guys,

Just thought I would post an update on the EA888 Gen3b engines.

I have a VW tiguan 2021 with the Ea888 gen3b 190HP version. I know people are scared to tune this beyond stage 1 due to the high-compression nature of this engine, but it is possible. Provided your tuner knows what he is doing. Obviously it might run down the life of the engine, but I am okay with it as I like to enjoy my cars when I have them.

Speaking to my local tuner in India, Hyderabad, he mentioned that he did tune a previous Q2 with the same engine to 380HP. All it needed upgraded was a downpipe, IS38 turbo, intercooler, Plugs, coil packs TCU tune and ECU tune.

So I pulled the plug and got mine done. It is all good and running fine after the tune and he claims he should be pushing around 350-360 Hp and over the next few weeks we plan on bumping up the boost slowly to achieve 380+ HP if possible.

Now to the car itself. The fastest car I ever drove setting aside supercars on hire is my daily drive EQC400 which is pretty quick with a 0-100 time of 5 seconds. My tiguan now is definitely pushing way above that and it keeps on pulling all way up in the rev range to 200 KMPH. it is a blast to drive and quite scary the way it pulls when the boost kicks in. It is running a 95 ron map. Testing the possibilities of doing a 100ron map which should ideally give more power and torque.

I saw this video where a tuner successfully tuned it and got 390 hp out of this engine. This gave me some confidence along with my tuner stating that he has done it before.

That is very impressive. 👌

Are you planning to increase the frequency of your oil changes?

I assume your oil will be working pretty hard. I guess you're looking at improving braking and suspension, too?

Hi,

Have not yet thought about all that as my car was just tuned 10 days ago.

Oil definitely yes, might have to do a change every 5-6k Kms.

The braking is actually fine for now. I believe the tiguan comes with larger brakes than the sedans or hatchbacks of VW/Skoda.

So might plan for it later. I have changed my wheels and tyres though so that definitely improved the overall performance and looks.

Suspension also I haven't put much thought into it.

I cant really lower it as I have a maxton design kit on it with the splitter, diffuser and side skirts.

This already makes it quite low in the front and the roads in India make it hard to not scrape them.

So I might have to stick with the stock height.

Well, it's certainly an exciting car you've got for yourself. 😄

I never expected that the 'Italian Tune Up' would be mentioned in the manual!
