Tyre Wear - Karoq Sportline 1.5 tsi 2020

Featured Replies

Just see what the Master Tech says then.  Not the Service Manager or anyone else with no training in Motor Engineering.   How Henry's different places have been with others is in the reviews for South and North.  Maybe recently they have improved. Not looked in the Dealers Section recently.  Maybe Arnold Clarks have by a miracle changed for the better.  Luck of the draw who you get looking at your car.   Best of luck.

If they do well remember and tell others.

  • @Pappasmurf Welcome to the forum.   Who will you be using Henrys or Arnold Clark or AN Other?   Neither will be doing a Hunter Alignment check or able to be coming to much of a con

  • We don't know you that well. Our combined experience is that tyre edge wear is usually an issue with cornering technique and/or slightly low pressures.

  • If someone at Hendrys really gives a toss about a customers 2 year old car with the outer edges wearing then they must be new employees there.

Henry's North. They're handy for the shops, and some of us (like me) have had decent service from them.

I'll be getting the alignment checked

In the second post of yours with photos attached, the tyre in the first photo does show an alignment problem.

If you want your next tyres to last longer then running a higher pressure will help.

2.4 bar all round.

I run my Citigo at 2.4 Bar on the front and the Fabia at 2.5 all round.

had different cars

Were any of these car as tall and heavy as this one?

Modern cars were tyres faster than older cars. I can go in to the reasons if you want.

Thanks, AG Falco

I have seen something similar before and it wasn’t all the way around, but in a series of flat spots about 90-120mm with gaps, but just on the edges.

Turned out it was country roads and heavy braking when something wide coming other way causing ABS to kick in, usually because in avoiding wide vehicle, were driving on edge of road where dirt and gravel and mud from field run off are.  The ABS pulses the brakes, and the tyres bounce a bit because of the low adhesion from the grot on edge of the road.

So I wonder if the Op lives in an area where wide vehicles (eg tractors) operate, or where there are no kerbs and wash off is often on the tar near edge of road.   The problem seems to have become worse if they have become poor at mowing verges in your area

Clever ABS to always pulse the brakes at exactly the same angular position of both wheels regardless of the speed!

Well not so clever really if you believe that is what happens.

Maybe, depending on which specific roads he uses.

As the OP has posted they have driven lots of cars for lots of years and do not drive like a 'Car d!ck'.

So really all about this car with these tyres.

Hopefully @papasmurf can tell us what the opinion he got from a Dealership employee.

We have similar tyre wear on our 19 plate Karoq with 12k miles. However, it's a known issue where I live which has one of the highest concentrations of roundabouts per sq km in the UK. Outside edge of the left front normally has the most wear. That said I'm going to get the tracking checked & / or switch the fronts to the back to make them last a bit longer.

I also have a Superb, the rear tyres on which went down to the canvas on the inside edges whilst the outside edges were showing 3mm of tread. Rear tracking was way out of wack from the factory. Hunter alignment sorted it out.

It's worth getting the alignment checked. Even new cars are not perfect.

MK?

For Scotland that could well be Glenrothes or maybe East Kilbride.

Never checked as my head spins when there.

I swap mine front to back every time I change from winter to summer wheels

That's the prevalent strategy here.

Correct - Well across the other side of the M1 in Newport Pagnell to be specific.

:) - If you'd been in Scotland I'd have wondered about Cumbernauld, East Kilbride or Glenrothes.

HI, just wondering how it it going? What did dealer say? Have they done a wheel alignment? Did you get new tyres?

I am asking as I bought (Henry'sGlasgow) a Karoq few weeks ago with 5600miles on 18" wheels, also Bridgestone Turanza and they have similar wear to yours.

On my Lexus GS I have done more than 20k miles and the tyres still have about 5mm of tread, they are all season tyres.

Thanks

Yes, I'd like to hear the outcome from @papasmurf too.

My money (IF I were a gambler) would have been on mis-alignment from the factory which I have experienced myself on brand new Mk2 Octavia.

Should that be true then I'd like to know whose is responsible, the factory or the dealer during PDC, and who should be paying for the early demise of the tyres.

It will be hard to prove whose fault it is, unless it is a brand new car. I will be doing a wheel alignment anyway if/when I get new front tyres. My concern is if all Karoqs are set this way and have a wear on the outside edge of the tyre.

I believe you can definitely exclude this abnormal tyre wear as being a characteristic of the car.

I have recently changed my Summer front tyres at 23,000 miles (using winter tyres for half of this) and although very worn the wear was quite uniform across the tread. Maybe your Suspension set up is misaligned or the car has had a hefty bang at the wheels upsetting things?

No abnormal tyre wear here either.

I hope mine do better than that! Used to a Yeti managing around 24k or more on front and going back to lease company on original rear tyres at 65k?

Last 150ps Yeti still on original tyres all round at 36k on trade in with winter tyres used for about 10k of that. Swapped front to rear each change summer to winter though. Those winter tyres now done 5 winters, two winters since Yeti went on Karoq, and still loads of tread left at around 15k

I have done 33K miles with rotation and the tyres were not new when I got the car, there is still about 4mm left if not more on all of them, I am very surprised for a 4x4.

Sounds like the car needs a wheel alignment which makes sense. I am glad it is not a car characteristic  but still surprised that Skoda dealer did not see an outside front tyre wear, I guess they just couldn't be bothered as the car had an owner and is 3 years old, so why would they, right? But the previous owner who only covered less 6k miles should notice tyre wear! Oh well, I will get it done.

Apologies for the delay. I didn't get any notifications through. My car was at the Dealers over a week ago and what I've been told is,........................it is unfortunately a characteristic of this particular model running 19" wheels. Did anyone have a contact for Skoda customer services. I wanted to follow up on this, with them. Ive noticed the new Sportline is supplied with 18s now. That is interesting. I'm now at 10k miles. I hoped to get 12k from the fronts which I may do, but I'm not accepting that "that's just the way it is" for the outside wear "issue".

I hate when the answer is - this is the way it is or our mechanic could not find/see any fault and the car is fine! Obviously it is not fine!

Further to my post earlier in this thread, here's a pic of my wife's 1.5 Edition 4 x 4 front left tyre at 13,500 miles. Front right is in a similar condition. 19 inch rims.

I'm having a wheel alignment check done next week. I know I said earlier that we have a lot of roundabouts locally but this sort of wear is a bit excessive IMO.

If I were a betting man I would put money on a tracking issue which would probably have been present from the factory.

We bought the car with only 9,000 on the clock so I'm guessing the Bridgestone's are the original tyres.

I will definitely switch the fronts to the back as well to try & eek a few more miles out of these.
