Battery dead or something else?

Featured Replies

Peculiar situation for me this morning as I have never had a battery die on me & i’m not sure it’s even the battery!

I have driven around 1000 miles last week, with daily use and this morning the car really struggles to tick over. After the 5th attempt it finally splutters up and is ready to go. All is well.

This evening, same again. All other electronics & doors are fine, unfortunately no warning on the dash which makes me think it could be possibly something else.

It is the original battery so I’m going to put the battery on a trickle charge tonight & i’m hoping that’s just the problem.

Has anyone has else had similar?

Struggling to turn over, rather than tick over? Petrol or Diesel?

On a six year old car with stop-start, I'd say the battery has quite likely done well.  There'll be stories of batteries lasting ten years or more, but I'd certainly get it checked.  There were a batch of duff Moll batteries which might've been around that era, but I suspect it'd have given up long before now if it was one of those.

My Superb V6TDI really struggled to fire up when the battery was getting to the twilight of its career.  Something to do with the Cold Cranking Amperage, and needing to spin over at a certain rate.

Hi Gaz,

Thanks for the reply. Perhaps my bad terminology, failing to start up so I think I meant turn over.

Petrol, Manual, VRS 2016.

I wasn’t sure it was because there was no battery warning and all other electrics were fine.

Annoyingly, my MOT is in 2 weeks time as well.

Yeah, think I'd have the battery tested first if it were me.

I thought the battery SOC function was deleted sometime before MY16 - my 65 plate Octavia does not have it.

Ah, my bad.  Apologies if that's a duff steer :blush

Nor did my 15 plate have it.
