Superb III erratic rear door locking.

Featured Replies

Recently I noticed the right hand rear door did not unlock when using the key fob. After many attempts it unlocked but later reverted to not working and failing to lock on the fob. If I use the central locking switch in the car all seems to work fine.

I have tried door slamming and WD40 but nothing cures the problem. It sounds as though the solenoid is not moving properly as it sometimes makes a clicking noise.

What I cannot understand is why the in car button makes the lock operate every time. I know sometimes when the fob battery is low it can cause problems but I used 3 fobs including one with a new battery. I am capable of taking the door apart if I can find some basic instructions but having read a few VAG lock problems thought I'd ask the forum.

Any ideas?

There are about 3 motors in each door lock, all doing different things.

Chances are one of the motors has failed as usual: if you put your ear to the door then lock it; it will sound really rough and grating almost. Will need a new door latch

Thanks for such a prompt response. It does not sound as you have suggested but tomorrow I am going to compare the sound from both rear doors with my stethoscope. Sounds quite expensive!

one of mine doesn't like cold weather (as in -20C) and refuses to let the car auto-lock as a result. I haven't seen any error message for mine... does yours report something in a scan? Like "won't SAFE" o "DE-SAFE"?

Sometimes can be a sign of battery on the way out.

More often just due to the crappy locks that VAG fit ( for decades now )

May DEADlock shut at some stage which can be a bit of a PITA, so best sort it ASAP

Nearly new battery. Thanks for the advice olddog.

Door lock failures on these models are very common.

Thanks. I am looking at replacement locks but there is a serious disparity in price although surprisingly cheap. I haven't looked at the Skoda price yet!

Update. I purchased a replacement lock from skoda-parts.com in Czechoslovakia. It was the wrong part but I had ridiculous conversation/messages with them as they claim it was correct but clearly for the left not right side. End result they can't supply it and have refunded fully after its return.

I now have 2 quotes for supply by breakers but both need to know the exact part number as the VIN details do not guarantee the correct part! I will take the lock out next week to check its part number.

Will keep you informed.

If you let us know what door, what spec (electric child lock, safelock) you have and a build date i can tell you what the right part number is.

Thanks Freedom. The car is a Superb Estate Sportline 280 first registered 01/03/2017 with VIN TMBME7NP7H7523987. Build date 08/01/2017

It is the right rear door and the car has Safelock. The child lock can be operated from the drivers door. Hope this helps.

Cheers

Its very weird what ETKA shows based on what youve told me.

From 07.11.16 to 06.11.17 for the rear right door you had 2 options

5TA839016D (superseded to 5TA839016K) which had KESSY and SAFELOCK

5TA839016E (superseded to 5TA839016L) which came with or without KESSY and NO SAFELOCK

There is literally no option between them dates for a 4H5 which is electronic child lock.

Now its also very weird because from 07.11.17 onwards you have the 4H5 options which are

5TA839016H (superseded to 5TA839016N) which had Electronic child lock, Kessy, Safelock

5TA839016J  (superseded to 5TA839016M) which had Electronic child lock, Kessy or no kessy, NO SAFELOCK

So if your car has a build date of 08/01/2017 and has electronic child lock then it falls in to neither category.

My guess is you are getting confused with the child lock - The drivers door switch has 2 options - either a single button which will just disable rear windows, or 2 buttons which will disable the rear windows and also disable the rear interior handle. Ive posted a picture below to show you.

I had a similar problem on the left rear door, intermittent lacking and then a total failure. I could only lock the door with the child lock in the door shut. You could hear it trying to latch when going over 10 mph, but failing to do so.

Replaced under warranty, so i can’t advise part numbers.

Sorry to drag up an old thread but I have this issue now. I have the two buttons which i believe is just the childlock rather than the Safelock function. Would I be assuming correctly therefore part number 5TA839016K
