Regional Accent

Featured Replies

I live in Suffolk and yesterday made a trip northwards into the wild Norfolk countryside.

Nearing Norfolk's major town I realised that the Satnav voice had adopted a regional accent.

Norwich would normally be pronounced similar to how it is written "nor-witch".  However I realised the Satnav lady was saying "nar-witch".

Simply clever!

Don’t understand why this post was moved. It is specific to the Karoq satnav voice.  The pronunciation can be weird e.g. when needing a u-turn it says “Make a u-turn if passable” not “...if possible”.

Maybe because i flagged it for a mod for a wider audience and more discussion and the attention of those maybe not getting this advance in technology.

?

Have Skoda / VW just introduced this for Karoq Sat Navs and those with other vehicles have to just settle for some other non regional accents?

The sat nav in my previous Octavia had a problem with town names like Bicester - which is pronounced as "Bista" but she pronounced as "Bi-ses-ter" - and Fareham which she pronounced as "Far-um".

I reckon they use phonetic rules now rather than recorded speakers like the RNS-E in my previous Audi.

id love to hear what the satnav would make of irish place names :D

LOLROFHMS!

I noticed something similar when I changed my 2016 Octavia for a 2018 Karoq.  The satnav voice pronunciation on the Octavia was as good as any other I've come across.  However, with the Karoq I noticed some very strange pronunciations of both street names and directions with a similar rural sounding accent.  I wouldn't call it regional though, I'm in Birmingham.  I've just taken delivery of a new facelift Karoq and from what I've heard so far the voice seems more "normal".
