No launch control on new vRS?

Featured Replies

Tried yesterday. Put it on sport mode. Pressed down brakes and then applied gas but "nothing" happened - the revs didn't go up.

Maybe I was doing it wrong.

Try reading the manual...

From owners manual…

Select S mode

deactivate ASR

keep brake pedal depressed

fully press accelerator

release brake pedal

Thanks. I missed the ASR step.

About user manuals -  never read a user manual for a car and never will. I'll try Google but won't go beyond that.

Things need to be simple to use.

Other than posting questions on forums, you mean? 😉

Couple of questions... wouldn't reading the manual be quicker than waiting for someone to read it for you and post the relevant bit? Also, have you ever wondered if there are things your cars have been able to do that you nothing about, simply because you refuse to read the manuals?

Yeah, can't argue with that really.

There are couple of things that annoy me that I should look up in the manual. For example, when driving with ACC on, it automatically adjusts the speed to traffic signs. Want to get rid of that (I'm not ignoring them, I just want to lower/increase the speed on my terms, not on car's).

I think these:

You think correct - I turned them off too.

I always get caught out by the autonomous emergency breaking at a certain point on my way home every day.  There's always a car parked in a layby facing oncoming traffic which always makes the car break hard.  Gives everyone in the locale kittens every time.  It's a really pitty that doesn't work better.

In an actual lay-by or a parking space on the carriageway? If the former, then that's just wrong. If the latter, then don't get so close before pulling out to go round it 😎.

:D :D :D

Sorry but 'launch control' on something like a Kodiaq - it just makes me laugh.

You'll Google it but won't go beyond that?  But you did go beyond that - you asked the question on Briskoda.

Have to agree with Yogi. What's more simple - reading the physical manual ( or downloading it off the website and reading it in front of you)  or creatng a post and then waiting for someone else to read the manual, have them take a photo from that online manual, and then post that photo on to Briskoda, for you to look at?

Bloody laziness, that what it is. :D

RTFM.

In a lay-by, directly adjoining the main carriageway.  System isn't bothered by cars facing the direction of travel, but as soon as it spots one facing the other way - 'kajoing' (tm) .  Clearly not right.

Oh, it's totally pointless. But I'll end up trying it out some day, I'm sure... just for fits and giggles, and I reckon if properly warmed up it could beat the quoted 6.5 seconds to hit 60. To be fair though, with the adaptive dampers set in sport mode, it corners and handles pretty well for such a large car. It's never going to be anything like a hot hatch or a sports car, but then you can't fit 7 + the dog in either of those. But we've done this to death many times, so let's not go there again.

The one thing I will say is that the gearbox is the weak link in the VRS. It's just so sluggish and nothing like what a DSG box can be like (I remember the first generation in an Audi TT - gear changes were instant and when you needed them) - from what I gather, it's nothing mechanical, but the software/firmware they load onto the box. I have noticed you can get the DSG box 're-flashed', so maybe there is a simple cure for it. But as it stands, that's the one thing that is holding the VRS back from being utterly brilliant and actually being able to make use of the undoubted poke it has under the bonnet.

(side note: watching old Top Gear episodes and it's funny hearing them describe cars that do 0-60 in 6.5 seconds as 'proper fast'... how times and expectations have changed)

I thought once that too until I found out my car can do things I never knew.

He did well with a 1.4 TSI.  His usual is saying 0-62 then 0-60 when showing 62.  As long as the timing to 62 mph is accurate.

If it's always the same point then just hit the throttle a bit as you pass. Car knows you're in control then.

Yeah the DQ500 tune on the RS TDI is far more snappy, surprisingly. But it seems to be all the DQ381s seem to be a bit lazy out the box, even my Golf R 7.5 DSG feels like it's asleep in manual mode.

The RS TSI needs a ECU + DSG tune to unlock the torque missing from the factory tune. Once that's sorted then the RS TDI won't be as missed.

Always said it was a very good engine, and quicker than the book claimed.

The torque is there - you just have to wait a couple of seconds for the DSG box to think about it, do the shifts, and then it moves like a bee has just stung its bottom. Yes, the engine is capable of more (it's the same as the lump that's in a Golf R, after all) and it would be nice to unlock that potential as the chassis could easily cope with it, but I'd settle for the DSG being more responsive, that would increase the perception of 'quickness' and the enjoyment, even if it doesn't actually make it any quicker.

The 1.4 TSI is a great engine which is why available in other world regions mated to a 8 speed autobox.   Where the WLTP figures do not matter just genuine emission figures so no need for the hybrid kidology.

Yeah disagree here. The new RS TSI has a driving experience far closer to a 220PS Tiguan than a Tiguan R, aka not bad but not bee-sting quick. Too much weight and high CoG for 370nm to be impressive- the TDI obviously doesn't rev out but it's damn effortless to get up to speed without going past 3k rpm.
