Power steering pipes options

Featured Replies

When checking my skoda fabia 1.4 tdi 2006 I noticed both power steering metal pipes coming out of the steering res bottle both very rusty and will need replacing.

I'm looking at options are these both low, high pressure or a mix?

I was thinking of maybe rubber hoses or braided if anybody does those.

Thanks

You'll know when they need replacing, because one will perforate and start to leak. Until then, you're wasting your time and money, I think.  Many other things may get in the way of the car's eternity before that.

If they're rigid pipes, you need rigid pipes to replace them. Also, as @Breezy_Pete says, wait until they go porous before spending out any money.

The pipes the paint come of and bulging in places rust bad its either the paint or both pipe and paint.

I will try get some pictures they don't look to good if you tried to move them they would snap or leak for sure.

I do a lot of traveling so things on the cars need to be right. These pipes are bulging and around the clips even worse. They will go at any point soon I would rather fix them up before that happens to be honest.

I got a few options to think about here depending if there low pressure and high pressure pipes.

I could get hydraulic pipes made rubber ones with the correct ends to match depending on the price. I might ask some local firms to see how much.

The original pipes any idea where these both can be bought brand new for the best prices?

Thanks

I would get them made up with stainless fittings if you're going to go to all this trouble, it'll be cheaper and better than dealer parts.

Yeah there'll be a place near you that can make them up

Only thing is you'd want to have them off the car so they can use it as a template.

Fwiw these cars are fine to drive without power steering so you could absolutely drive it without if you needed to.

Well, they can be driven, but it feels a lot like you have arms failure, ah yes and will fail a UK mainland MOT (less certain about a Norn Irn one or an NCT).

I have no problems driving my mk1 with no power steering and I'm not a particularly strong person.

No doubt it will fail an MOT, but if it fails on you one day out of the blue, you can absolutely drive on it until you can get it fixed.

I've had to drive mine without PAS before. I'm not that strong either, but managed it fine... besides the Sainsburys car park... :D
