Is my clutch about to go?

Featured Replies

Ever since I got the car it's made a screaching noise when lifting the clutch in 1st on hills. Rarely does it any other time.

This week however I've had two separate incidents where I've tried to gear up, and the pedals gone slack, revs have screamed at me and the little computer bit has showed I was still in 1st or 2nd when I'd put it into a higher gear. Today's incident was just as I was joining a motorway and was scary as hell. Assuming this means my clutch is about to go? Any ideas how much it costs roughly to fix? It's a 16 plate 1.6 greenline. Cheers.

How many miles?

Do you have any idea how it was driven before you got it? I drive my sister in law's metro years ago and the clutch was shot but she was so used to it and never did more than short town trips it didn't bother her. It was 4 speed and I took it on the motorway and felt like it was in second at times. Had to be real gentle with it. That's the car I learned rev matching!

I'm not 100% sure to be honest. Got it from Perrys.

First comment - if you've just bought it from a trader  - take it back! You have rights - https://www.theaa.com/car-buying/legal-rights

Engine revving up but car not gaining extra speed could be bad clutch slip - more noticeable in higher gears.

However engine revs as somehow you have selected a wrong gear by mis aligned gear shift - could be why it showed it was in 1st or 2nd?

Either way I think you have just bought someone's previous problem.

It’s a single mass flywheel in the 1.6 isn’t it? So you should get away with just doing the clutch. I’d reckon about £500 from an independent garage. My old 1.6 is still on the original clutch at 219k so I didn’t have to change it.
