Aircon not great.

Featured Replies

I am rather disappointed with the air con in my Karoq, has anyone else on hear who has a Yeti or previously had one noticed that the Karoq air con is not as good as the Yeti air con ? The Karoq setting only goes down to 16 I can’t remember what the Yeti lowest setting was but the Yeti air con was definitely colder. I was in France with temperature 42 degrees in 2019 and my Yeti air con was superb here in England with the temperature 37 degrees the Karoq air con is ok but not great 😡

  • john999boy changed the title to Aircon not great.

Yes, exactly the same. We have a 2106 Yeti and a 2019 Karoq.  The Karoq aircon is nowhere near as cool as the Yeti.  I believe WLTP is to blame.

WLTP ?

Turning the ac down to 16° is only going to overwork the system, cause ice to form on the condenser/ evaporator causing restricted airflow so will never cool interior.

Every car I’ve had with climate, including a previous Yeti and my current Kodiaq, I’ve set the temp to 19-20° ac on and auto selected and I’ve never been too cold in winter  or too hot even in the current heatwave.

The aircon is cold and crisp in my 2021 Karoq, seen lots of complaints about the aircon in Karoqs, but not in mine. Far more efficient than the old system in my 2006 mercedes (which was recently serviced with gas and a new condenser)

OBD Eleven has a one-click app to tweak the settings of the air-con system to set it as a 'hot country' setting - it does work and makes a slight difference in real life, based on trying it out for a few weeks now.

It sets the compressor to work at a higher cooling rate to help bring the cabin to the desired temperature more rapidly - I imagine for emission/WLTP/fuel economy reasons, Skoda set most of Europe as 'non hot country'  (Middle East/India/Singapore/Australia, etc.) Clearly, it can't make the temperature any colder.

Phope, sorry I don’t quite understand your post but it looks interesting so how do I get the app ?

Skoda sell their models all over the world, including in hot/humid/tropical countries and reuse the same hardware across a number of models and trims, whether that is for Norway. Sweden or India & Singapore, or anywhere in between these temperature extremes.

In the European market regions, they fit the same air con condenser as they do for very hot/humid/tropical countries, but choose to have it set at a lower power rating for WLTP emissions purposes, as driving the air-con unit at full capacity all the time will have an impact on fuel economy.

Simplest way to think about it is that if the car interior is at 30 degrees when you get in and you want to get it cooled to 20 degrees, the car (when in hot country mode) will achieve that target temperature in a quicker time than a car set in non hot country mode - whether that is 5 minutes quicker, or whatever...I don't know, but my car does seems to get cooler at a quicker rate than before I made the change.

https://obdeleven.com/en/ is where you can buy the hardware device needed to connect to the diagnostic port

Just come back from Europe in our Karoq. On days when external temperature was 35 degrees, the inside was nice and cool with the aircon set to 19 degrees. In my view the aircon is absolutely fine. Still achieved ~52mpg despite plenty of aircon use.

After January 2017 a new aircon gas HFO-1234yf had to be used in cars (to reduce hydrocarbon pollutants). Perhaps this also has reduced the efficiency of the aircon units?

See my post above. My car is 2021, so has the new fluid.
