The best one in my opinion is vcds but you won't be able to add new key with it.

With vcds you'll be able to read all modules and change some of the settings l, the price may vary for the tool depending how many vins you will need.

When I bought my car I had similar problem with the keys the cheapest way for me was to make a clone of my existing key.

Thanks mate I’ll look at the vcd only really need it for me,, and yes I’m now thinking the best and cheapest way is just to clone my key,,; just need to find a cheap locksmith 🤣

4 years ago I enquired at Timpsons for a new fob for my MK1 Octy and they were the cheapest @ £80 for a direct copy in the end I bought a fob & virgin immob chip off eBay and with VagTacho read the immob PIN code then with VCDS cloned the key myself

I used xhorse vvdi mini to make a clone of the transponder, key was cut from eBay pre cut and the remote came from eBay and I've done the learning with vcds

Terrible choice. There is so many better options. And Carista is expensive for what it is.

you’re asking for best which will always have to be odis the genuine tool - costing nearly £10,000.

now if you mean best for diy use at a reasonable price, then the only 2 valid options are vcds or obdeleven

wouldn’t go for anything else personally

Where can I get vcds for the best price? Have seen the dongles on eBay but then assume I have to pay for a license from RossTech.

Depends on price of the bay dongle's, they might be fake clone heads.

A genuine lead just works when you download software.

If previous owner registered head, then for support they ask you pay a transfer of ownership fee.

A genuine used HEX CAN-USB should be £250+ based looking at eBay.  Anything significantly cheaper is probably a cloned/pirated version so you won't get any support from Rosstech. The software will have been modified so you're unlikely to get updates either and there's a risk it'll contain a virus or malware :)

A HEX CAN-USB has unlimited VINs but won't support newer cars (2016 onwards). There is no registration or 'licence' required, you download the latest software from Rosstech and you're good to go. If you want support from Rosstech, then it'll be $99 to transfer ownership to yourself.

If you decide you want a new interface, a 3-VIN HEX-V2 is around £225 from authorised suppliers. If you know it'll be used on multiple cars, the 10-VIN tends to work out as better value. With a new interface support is included so there is no extra $99 to pay.

Personally, if it's just a single car, a 3-VIN makes sense. If you're at all likely to buy another VAG car or offer help to others, a 10-VIN is a better choice 👍
