Cooled glove box

Featured Replies

I recently took delivery of a Scala 1.0 TSI 110 SEL. It has dual zone climate control and should therefore have an air conditioned glove box. However, there's a hole in the top of the glove compartment where the dial should be and no pipe connecting it to the air con.

I queried this with the dealer and got the following reply:

The cooled glove box is not a standard feature on the Scala models...this feature has been removed from all the other models in the range that came with this option as standard equipment. This is now due to the shortage of semi-conductors and that is why the specification changes have had to be made.

Does anyone else have a 2022 Scala with an air conditioned glove box included (or missing)?

Also, would it really need an additional semi-conductor to get cool air to the glove box? The dual zone climate control is fully functional - surely it just needs a pipe and an on/off dial?

Thanks in advance for any advice/guidance,

Steve.

Looking in the workshop repair manuals for heating and air conditioning, I can see no reference to removal of the pipe for the glovebox cooling.

The hole in the top of the glovebox, might just be from the fact the glovebox fits a few model's.

Regards the chip shortage, that has nothing to do with that, doesn't make one iota of sense.

Image for Octavia III that I know has glovebox cooling, the search also comes up in document with 1 hit.

This makes absolutely no sense.

It's mentioned in the Scala workshop manual (General body repairs, interior), under 'removing and installing the glove compartment':

- Detach intake hose for AC glove compartment.

So the question is, have they really removed this feature from all models in the range that should have it as standard?

Hopefully another owner of a 2022 model might see this thread and contribute. In the meantime I'll try a different dealer at the weekend and see if I get the same response.

The plot thickens then.

Under body diagram as you mention, they specify removal of the pipe for glovebox removals.

Under Heating & AC documents, zero mention.

Under online handbook, zero mention of the usual knob to adjust flow.

Fingers crossed someone with 2022 model will read/answer.

I will also check ETKA parts to see if this pipe is there (7zap if you like also)

It does not look good...

(5) Cap fitted over the A/C vent port from 25.11.2019>> onwards

6 Air pipe from A/C to Glovebox vent hole up to >>24.11.2019

7 Valve for A/C setting, fitted to glovebox up to >>24.11.2019

I mean you could check yourself by removing glovebox, and try to locate the Cap, remove and switch on A/C

Then if you get nice cold air, buy the hose and valve yourself

Skoda will not pay for these parts if you car was built from 25.11.2019 onwards!

First world problem.

It does seem to be.

I have never kept chocolate or drinks cool in a 'Glove compartment', or gloves or sunglasses or anything else for that mater.

Thanks varooom, that's really useful info. It looks like they may well have stopped fitting the pipe to cool the glove box, although I can't imagine how that relates to the semi-conductor shortage??

I'll either remove the glove box and cap to see if it vents cool air, or I'll see if the local dealer will give me a price to have the pipe fitted (which should confirm that it's a viable fix without me having to hunt for the A/C cap).

If I get a definitive answer I'll post here so any other owners in a similar position will have an answer to this 'first world problem'.

Best of luck with the process, not sure if dealers will be open to such a complicated retrofit... also if they do they will charge you the Earth for such a simple job.

I do agree that it is a First World problem, but I used  to spend a fair bit of time on the road myself, so my cold drink and sandwich was happy.  The actual issue is more that if you should have had it fitted, after spending so much on the cars... then it damn well better be there.  I cannot think that anybody would be happy about not getting the paid for trim level if they were honest.

The Dealer that emailed you the chip shortage is a ducking clown, no way that little cap has a microchip in it 😄

Feel free to grab that picture and email them if needed, also given the price of such a simple item, you will be mad to pay dealer for these parts (scrap yard or anywhere else will be cheaper)

I think it's more for the silk scarf on a Summer day 😊

I spend a fair amount of time sitting charging an EV. So like 1 hour for every 150 miles.  Not to waste all my money buying food and drink on the road I take a cool box with stuff in it bought for much cheapness and for toilet needs have a catheter since they have removed bushes around charging hubs.

You can buy the kit to do yourself its a flexible pipe you remove the blanking plate and push fit the dial

I have a 2022 Scala, and it does not have an air conditioned glovebox.

  • 4 weeks later...

Have it, never use it. If anything probably just makes the whole system less efficient. Take all the crap in to fit a can in and it may be slightly cooler than the rest of the car. That'll be why they deleted it.

Just skip to 5mins in on video below.

mp to 5.

I wrote a guide and it should be the same for both the Kamiq and Scala:
