1.2 vs 1.0 TSI

Featured Replies

I'm looking at getting a Fabia around 2017-2018 and looking at both the 1.2 TSI and also the 1.0.

I've found some threads from when the 1.0 was introduced, but not much information after that.

Which one is to prefer and why?

What Engine is best if doing some highway miles in higher speeds, let's say 110-130kmh?

Depends on how many some highway miles are and to what proportion of total mileage, also whether it's just you or you and heavy luggage or passengers and luggage, also what you are used to and what you expect from the Fabia you choose.

It might also depend on the gearbox choice for each car.

I've never driven a 1.0 but as as a generality the four cylinder 1.2 is more suited than the 3 cylinder 1.0 for more than occasional higher speeds highway miles.

I'm looking at a manual and 99% of the engines seemed to be paired up with the 5speed.

Is it worth adding a bit of extra money to get the 6speed?

I'm mostly driving alone or with one passager.

I'm guessing i will do about 1000miles/month average and 60-70% will be highway.

You would have to check with 1.0 owners and test drive both cars including on a highway but I would think the 1.2 would be more suited but I don't know what gearbox ratios are in the 5-speed boxes in each or if they are the same for both engines.

Personally I have never found a 6th gear to be of much use but it might depend on the car and engine that it is in.

You need more input and information from others that know more (than me) and owners of 2017-18 1.0 and 1.2 cars and to test drive the vehicles yourself.

Your decision might also depend on your priorities with things like fuel consumption and ride comfort and noise or other priorities.

We have a 2017 (June) 1.0 TSI (110 version), six speed and love it. Had the car from new and done about 45k miles.

Most of our driving is rural/town and we get ~55mpg with ease. Motorway is similar unless.

Hi Snowman, welcome to the forum. Although not quite as lazy as my 1.4 TSI Octavia, my wife has a Fabia 1.0, 110 with the M6 gearbox - and I've found it to be pretty relaxed at (legal) motorway speeds.

The  5 Speed Manual is fitted only with the lower powered engine, be it a 1.2 90PS or the 1.0 95PS TSI engines.

The 6 speed manual is fitted only with the higher powered engine, be it the 1.2 or the 1.0 TSI engines, both have 110PS.

The more powerful engine with the 6 speed manual would be better for you if you do lots of high speed driving.

Both engines are good.

The history of the car would be the first thing to look at.

Thanks, AG Falco

I have the 110 PS 6 speed, I do around 80 miles a day and can keep up with traffic in it fairly easily. There's enough torque as well to overtake, I'd spend the extra money and get the 6 speed as it sits in the right powerband at 60 mph.

Good advice there, and look at the condition of the car.

It might also depend on whether you intend to keep the car into high and higher mileage as both are turbos and direct injection so under pressure.  I would favour a 1.2 (90) lower power with 5 speed over a 1.0 higher power (110) 6 speed for possibly being better in the higher mileage and general longevity - but other may know better from experience or disagree with my thoughts.
