Playing music from external source

Featured Replies

Good afternoon everyone,

I have just taken delivery of a 2021 model Superb Estate as my previous one was written off, would you believe by being run into whilst parked outside my work. It will no doubt take a while to get used to the new(er) infotainment system but my immediate question relates to playing music. I used to have 2 SD card slots in the glove box with lots of albums on, this car has the Canton sound system but no SD card slots, just a USB-c by the ashtray and a (normal) USB slot in the box between the seats. My question is how best to play my albums? Do I need to copy them from SD to a USB stick, or could I load them on to a large capacity micro SD card and put that in my phone, would I be able to play them from there? I have successfully used Android auto today to play back some things from BBC Sounds. Also, is Skoda Connect any use? Dealer said I could download it from the app store to enable the emergency call facility (red button in overhead console). Any other pointers most welcome.

Thanks in advance,

Chris.

As you have Canton, one of the options of to copy to the internal HD. You should be able to do this from any of the USB sockets.

I have also moved to  a 2021 model Superb from a 2016 and struggled with listening to my own music for a bit. I tried using a USB C stick and transferred the files from my old SD but I don't like the way the new 2021 media interface behaves. Playlists are particularly awkward.

The best solution I have found is to upload all my music to iBroadcast (https://www.ibroadcast.com/home/). You can then install the iBroadcast app on your phone and play your music through Android Auto or just Bluetooth. I have found the latest version of wireless Android Auto to be pretty reliable.

The basic version of iBroadcast is free and it allows you to store and synchronize your music on your phone. This allows you to play your music when your phone data is offline. iBroadcast organises your music library and you can  also create playlists.

Whenever I get new music, instead of having to update my SD card, I upload it to the iBroadcast cloud using their windows app (MediaSync Lite) and it automatically updates my library on the cloud and my phone.

I believe you can also upload music to Spotify, but I hate Spotify.

Thanks for the information, will give both a try over the long weekend.

Thanks @Schoda206.
I’m going to check out the iBroadcast app as one issue I have with SD or USB storage as the car sometimes complains about file limits. This invariably happens when adding more music and would mean not having to have different source storage (SD2/USB2 etc) to resolve the issues.

I would go with USB stick option, you'll get better sound quality than streaming over Bluetooth.

Due to insurance replacement I went from a 2019 Superb with Canton (with SD card in the glovebox for music) to a 2021 version with Canton but with just USB-A and C slots, as described above. I’ve ended up using the USB-A in the centre armrest bin, but it has worked fine. I prefer using that compared to Bluetooth or wireless CarPlay, as I store music at the highest bit rate.

As an aside the updated Canton in the 2021 (MIB3) sounds far better than the previous MIB2.5 version. It now has a much fuller and warmer sound and much less bright than the older Canton. At first I thought the improvement was the placebo effect of a new car in my mind, but I did some research and it would appear that the Canton DSP was updated/improved with the move to MIB3.
