Rear wiper arm removal

Featured Replies

I have just got myself a polo rear wiper but I can't get the old one off. I have soaked it with wd-40 but it still won't budge. Is it supposed to lift straight off or does it need twisting?

undo the nut , and waggle the arm side to side , then it should free itself from the splines , when you put the new arm on do not just tighten it down where the original arm was as this will make the new blade wipe in the wrong place , put it on and gently nip the nut then get someone to operate the wiper , then you will see the sweep of the blade , then adjust new arm position to get the sweep in the centre , then tighten up the nut , done my own like that so i'm speaking from experience

It took a lot of effort to get my old one off when I fitted my aero rear wiper. It seems 80,000 miles later, it had more or less rusted to the motor spline.

Copious amounts of wd40 - and in the end (seriously) hitting it with a hammer on the ends to try and spin it round. :( (PS: My old wiper was knackered anyway, so felt this was not an unjustified course of action. )

It's still not coming off:( Would rather not have to take a hammer to it:eek:

you have took the nut off haven't you  seriously though mine just fell off so to speak ,try ,with the arm up bending it side to side then pull and push the arm against the spindle ,or try one off those little bunsen burner type things to warm it up , careful of the paint though , but as jason says you may have to resort to the FBH , it doesn't really matter if you wreck the arm as you have a new one

I'm not even going to answer that!! I have tried twisting, jiggling, waggling and pulling but it just seems to want to stay there. Thought this would be one of my easier mods:eek:

Finally managed to get it off!! Ended up using a big screwdriver and levering it against the back of my hand to prise it off the splines, almost smacked me in the face:eek: Went to put the new arm on and thought "where's the teeth to match the splines?". Think they must use a soft metal which moulds to them. Tried doing the method for lining up (Ric04vrs) but must have pushed it on too far as I couldn't move it. Sweeps a bit too far to the left but I'm happy coz it looks much nicer:thumbup:

They do let go suddenly. I was giving one of my track alloys last night a damn good kicking as it was seized on - wouldn't move - then a good whack from behind with a mallet, and finally it let go in spectacular fashion. :D Same thing happened with my old wiper arm too. :D

wiper arm is aluminium and wiper spindle is steel so when you tighten the arm on it makes its own splines in the arm hole

Very useful thread - if only it had pictures...

Here's some

We resorted to cutting it off with a hacksaw - refused to budge otherwise...

Hammer method works. You don’t have to hit hard so you can be accurate and powerful enough to get it off.

Thanks for the advice and to BriSkoda once again. You People Rock.
