Noisy Engine?

Hi all,

 

I've got a pretty old Skoda Yeti 2.0 TDI ...2010, 150,000 miles

 

Runs pretty well although the emissions fix is an ongoing problem.

 

I've recently noticed, especially on the motorway, that the engine noise is louder than it used to be, not especially different, just louder...is this par for the course with a car of its age and mileage?  I'm taking the care in for a service soon and was wondering if there was anything extra I should ask them to check?

I take it you do check the oil and water etc regularly?
Have you lost any of the rubbers around the wheel arches at the bottom of the rear doors?

Could it be having a regen?

Yes, oil is good...actually the coolant looks a little low but it's there.

 

tell me more about these rubbers?

Do you mean here?

If these go missing or not fitted correctly it makes a lot of noise especially at speed.

I agree with Urrell, these can go walkabout. I've had to replace the nsr twice - you'd think something that big not being there any more would be immediately obvious but .......

If that is the problem make sure you order the correct one - not only are they handed but the profile seems to have changed two or three times over the years.

If it's high frequency noise I'd be looking for poor sealing of doors/windows as suggested above, or even the bonnet seals.

 

If it's more a low frequency boomy type sound it might be worth checking the various exhaust mounting rubbers in case they have gone missing or gone hard with age.  Any part of the exhaust touching the body work ?  Any exhaust leaks, including the flexible section near the engine ?  Engine mounts OK and no part of the engine/gearbox touching anything that it shouldn't ?

 

The only other things I can think of is that the engine is working harder than usual (but you would see that in poor MPG / brakes binding and getting hot etc.) or the French authorities have spent millions giving you super smooth roads to reduce tyre roar so that you can hear the engine better !

My 2010 CFHA engine becomes MUCH quieter after an oil change, its at 147k

I just took a closer look at the notes from my most recent MOT and although he car passed there was a note about wear to the silent block and the need for a wheel balance...so that could well be it...the car is booked in to have this check out.

Silent Block = rubber to metal bonded bush, probably the engine mounting in this instance likely the dogbone bush.

 

In the 60's - 80's the company with the patents manufacturing them in the UK was Silentbloc, the French division was the André Rubber Company, the bushes are still known generically as Silent Bloc in France, the name has all but died out in the UK.

Doesn't the Silentbloc refer to the 4WD propshaft coupling/damper  ?

If the name has been misused as is frequently the case in France then it could be any rubber component but to answer your question, I have never heard of the propshaft Guibo coupling being referred to as a Silentbloc.

 

Also JamieSandford's profile does not indicate that their car is a 4x4.

Silentbloc more usually relate to suspension/engine mount bushings.
