A faint rattle when applying breaks

Featured Replies

Hi guys.

I have a Skoda Octavia HATCH SE L 1.6tdi 115 PS DSG 5E345D/C8AAV.

I Purchased this vehicle in December 2021 used car from (Telford Skoda) with 17343 miles. I've currently done 37777 miles since purchased.

My warranty expires December 2022.

I've had my front left wishbone and two front shocks replaced in past few months.

In the past two weeks now I've started to notice when I come to stopping my car, I'm hearing a rattle which sounds like if it's a heatsheild or something.

I've had few independent garages who have checked my car but they don't seem to hear anything and when they do they say it sounds normal. They checked all joints and bushes and suspension and can't seem to find any faults.

To me it sounds as if it can be coming from the DSG gearbox as when the gears are lowering down when applying the brakes, it's then that I heat it.

Now when I was at the garage who changed my shockers and wishbone, they had my car on the ramp. The mechanics checked every joint and suspension, no faults found. But when they were spining my front wheels that very sound I hear was doing that when spinning the wheels with their hands. Again mechanic said that was normal.

Anyone had any similar issues like me?

Thanks.

Could be a stone trapped between the brake disk and the shield,

Well I can remove the front wheels one by one and have a look myself tomorrow.

Flexing or rattling the shield can dislodge them. Or reversing fast and braking hard can  work I am told. My first one was removed by a garage for £50!

If I remove the front wheel one by one, am I looking at the plate behind the brake disc? If yes how would I know if that's the issue?

You're looking for a piece of gravel/stone trapped between the disc and the shield or around the caliper. It may be difficult to see, the first time it happened to me I ended up having the brake assembly dismantled under warranty. The garage presented me with a piece of gravel highly polished on one side, and a bill for £50, not a manufacturing fault so I had to pay.,

I've taken both wheels off and I couldn't see anything behind the disc and shield. I'm going to call Skoda and have car booked in.  Could be something like you mentioned a stone or gravel stuck between the calipers.

Did you spin the wheels and hear the noise. Does it do it with both wheels?

Yes both wheels were being spinned by a mechanic and you can hear that noise?

When driven and on uneven roads, you can hear that same noise and a rattle.
