So after they went i whipped the cambelt cover off an the cambelt is quite loose.. Also on the right tooth wheel (cam wheel) the silver plate that's fixed to the cog itself has come loose..  What can I do now? Obviously car is parked up now.. Hello D Master, welcome to the forum. Almost certainly your cam belt tensioner has failed. Warning, do not rotate the engine any further until you can get it checked.

Are you also saying that one of the cam gear wheels appears to be loose on the camshaft?

Or the tensioner stud has failed

Either way, the cambelt tensioner is not operating correctly, and it is only great good fortune that has had this detected whilst the engine is stopped. Has it failed whist you were driving, a fortunate result would have been one broken camshaft.

Worse results might include 2 broken camshafts, one or more chipped pistons and a rod through the block.

I have only just bought car a few weeks ago guys

Its always been a pig to start so at first i thought ahh. Must be glow plugs.. But defo not them..  the cae cranks ok but won't start easily( it will eventually) but until i can get it looked at I won't bother now.. This is the plate on the back of This wheel that has come loose.. See pic.. This is rear of the cog

I rather suspect a broken camshaft as well as the tensioner!

What makes you  suggest that?

We had a 2013 A1 in two weeks ago with the similar EA189 (it is still sitting on the road outside) and the poly V belt lost a groove which went inside the belt cover and caused the belt to jump about 10 teeth. The owner said try a new belt and my reply was that due to the way the valves sit directly overhead and in line with the piston, when valves and pistons hit the damage to the valve gear is usually catastrophic and a new belt would be money down the drain… dead car.

Where is that drive sprocket from - is it the injection sprocket?

It actually happened to me, but I was driving at the time when the camshaft stopped and the crankshaft didn't!

UPDATE
So after giving this car to a so called mechanic last September I have finally got the car back but he can't get it running for some reason? I suspect he has knocked the timing out after fitting another Cam wheel (cog) which was the cause of the problem in the first place

So new cambelt fitted an new cam cog

Is anyone local who can set this up properly for me at all? I'm in Birmingham B27.. Car is now stuck on drive cranks over but won't start

I have all the tools but have never changed a cambelt or have the locking tool for bottom cog

I would like to keep the car it's not  the prettiest tbh but it still has plenty of life in yet

Also I need a fan belt tensioner we got the car recovered back minus the tensioner...

Car is 2007

Octavia VRS tdi
