Breakdown in France

Recommended Posts

My tale of woe hasn't been concluded yet. 😞 Although I'm hoping that this latest development is nothing too serious.

I drove the car home from the dealership yesterday and ran a couple errands probably doing about 8 miles in town traffic.  Everything was hunky dory.  Skip forward 24 hours (tonight) and I set off to the local shop, I'd not even gone 100 meters when my 'Check coolant level' flashes up on my dashboard joined by that scary long beep sound.  So I immediately returned home, parked up and checked the coolant expansion reservoir which did seem to have a little coolant in the bottom but it certainly wasn't at the minimum level that it should be.  I've had a good look under the car and around the engine bay and cannot see any signs of a leak, in fact it looks pretty dry.  It was too late to ring the dealership so I'll give them a buzz in the morning.

I'm hoping that it just developed an air pocket in the cooling system when it was filled up, which has worked it's way into the expansion reservoir and triggered the coolant level sensor.

Hopefully that's it or a loose hose. Airlock overheating  happened to me once after a BMW specialist replaced the coolant. I returned it immediarely through rush hour traffic. He simply revved it hard for  a few seconds and the airlock released. One top hose was cool ....until the airlock went. I was very unimpressed and concerned that it could have caused damage. It seemed ok after that.

After having a belt & pump change at an independent, my Superb took a couple of weeks to fully burp itself free from trapped air. Was topping up with coolant every day during this time but has been fine ever since.

Sounds very much like they didn’t run the bleed routine or weren’t aware of it. Needs to be done with a diagnostic tool.

Your car has a sticking sleeve on the waterpump, if its not overheating now then it has retracted, all you need to do is disconnect the wiring connector to the actuator and your car will behave perfectly and reliably for the next million miles, it will however be a little slower to produce heat from the heater on a cold morning, that is the only downside.

A diagnostic tester will not tell a breakdown mechanic that a vehicle has a blown head gasket, he likely typed into Google Translate "comment puis-je arnaquer ce pigeon Anglais?" (how can I rip off this dumb Brit?) 🤣

Getting the same problem on 2.0 TDI  only 40,000 km could you please tell me where to find this wiring connection could save me a fortune

Thanks

Simple suggestion, go to another official dealer if feasible.

The connector is on the pump actuator, you will need to remove the upper timing belt cover to see it.
