Octavia mk3 booked in for repair under warranty

Featured Replies

Hi guys.

Need some advice.

I've got a 2019 Skoda Octavia 1.6tdi SE L DSG AUTOMATIC.

I purchased from Telford Skoda in December 2021. Ive got (used car warranty) till December 2022.

Recently in past month I've started to get a strange rattle from the front wheels when the car is coming to a stop and also when I turn right in to a street.

I've also got a windscreen washer fluid leak from the front left wheel arch at the bottom.

I called roadside assistance on Saturday and they believe the rattle could be gearbox related and advised me to drop the car off to Henry Skoda north in Glasgow. I called them on that day but the service department was closed so earliest could drop off was today at 8am.

I've been told that they can't look at the car till nextweek as they are extremely busy up to October.

I asked about a courtesy car which they declined to offer me and the service guy said that's just the way life is and said nothing he can do to offer me a car.

Is Skoda right in the sense to not offer me a courtesy car or is there anything I can do to get one off them?

And he also said that I would need to pay for a diagnosis check of £115 plus the VAT if the faults are not under manufacturers Warranty.

That sounds like a dealer specific policy to me, even post-Covid I've always got a courtesy car from dealers and independents.

If you were advised not to drive the car then call Skoda Assist for then to arrange a hire or courtesy car.   Other wise the rattle might not be DQ200 related.   It could be disc brake cover related or stone trapped or anything that a Responder could have checked for.     Ps.  Service desk staff like those courtesy cars there for those and such as those.  Staff nipping off doing a wee bacon 🥓 butty run.    They can have an actual technician take your car for that run. Road test.  15 mins max.

I've had them offer me a courtesy car, which I declined on the basis that I was going shopping in Glasgow whilst mine was being serviced.

Ps. First 30 minutes of diagnostic £60.  So ask on that.  If a warranty claim is valid then no issue.  If something minor like a disc cover or brake pads they might waive the £60 or £115 if doing the quick diagnosis and work for you paying.     PPS.  Is that not £115 including VAT,. Like the £60 is. Vat included.

When I had roadside assistance come out on Saturday, first thing I mentioned was possible stone stuck in between the brake cover (which I already checked myself and also at my friend's garage).

The guy said the symptoms I'm describing is definitely sounding like  gearbox issue.

Am I best to call roadside assistance and get them to possibly get Skoda to arrange a courtesy car?

Im sure Skoda said around £115 plus the VAT fee if they find any issues which aren't covered under warranty.

Any signs of squealing, and/or of one front wheel being hot enough to steam if you wash the car immediately after a run? Those are what make me think of a stone trapped under a splash guard.

Was that not the person at Henrys?  They are not Skoda but a participating dealer in Skoda UK,s fixed servicing and maintenance.  So first 30 mins is £60.  Unless that has stopped.        I have not seen or heard your car, but the cattlegrid rattle was common.  But the rattle on a car running ok is not common with a DQ200 or something I have come across.

It will be £115 inclusive of vat after 30;minutes to 60 minutes if not covered by warranty.  So go to a Glasgow Automatic specialist or a mechanic and ask them if they can do a test drive.    The leak is another matter.   Ps.  Explain to the Auto specialist that you have a Skoda Warranty and can not have work done now. Maybe they will say on your bike. Maybe get your custom in the future.  Luck of the draw.

No squeeling and wheels weren't extremely hot.

As mentioned earlier I had my friend who has a garage check the car and there wasn't any stones between the brake disc or brake disk cover.

He had my car on the ramp with the hand brake down and gear in N, he checked all the suspension arms and bushes and was spinning the front wheels by hand and could hear the same sound as I hear when driving the car there's a rattle when car comes to a stop. He said that wasn't normal hearing that sound when he was spinning the wheels.

If the car is safe to drive and you feel safe driving it then do that until it can go in for a diagnosis.   If it fails while on warranty then good,   you get a new box, or clutch packs, selector fork or what ever.  Pay for a new warranty and all is good.  If not safe to drive call Skoda Assist and have a hire car delivered by them.  But the responder you had out should have said if safe or not in their opinion ,  they could have arranged a car.      ?  How many miles had the car done?

Called Skoda assist and they confirmed they emailed Skoda branch on Saturday to also give a courtesy car. They are going to call me back within an hour.

I can still drive the car but the roadside assist said on Saturday it's best not to drive too much and drive car to Skoda and leave it with them

Just got a call back from customer care and they said Skoda advised them as the car is still drivable so they can't offer me a courtesy car. Only once they have diagnosed the car and if it's a gearbox issue then that's the only time they will offer me a courtesy car.

Don't see why they should have my car booked in now but they can't look at it till next week.

Because other customers are waiting for their diagnosis and repairs and seeing as they have a Skoda that will be Warranty Work in many cases.

So no need for 'never seen that before' as there is nothing new if that is your full time job unless you started last week.

if,

'they all do that',  then fixing them should be pretty straight forward.

You can use any Authorised Skoda Repairer if they have a slot.  But maybe best avoid Parks of Hamilton or any location.

Just collected the car now. Hopefully drop it back off on the 26th September.

Just hope what ever issue they find is covered under the warranty.

Will update this page once resolved.

Squealing yes, rattling yes, steaming no.

A trapped stone would not generate even the tiniest fraction of the heat generated by normal gentle braking.

Is it possible, the next time it makes the noise, get it recovered by Skoda assist who have previously said it's best not to drive it? The garage may be more inclined to give you a loan car.

Strange the rattle appears once the car has reached its normal temperature. When I slow down it appears every time, if I go on uneven roads it appears and also over speed bumps.

It's been driving me mad since I've started hearing it for past few months.

That's when I got few garages to check my suspension and they all found nothing.

One of the garages even had the car on the MOT RAMP and found nothing as well.

I took each tyre off one by one and checked between the brake disc and shield for any stones and found nothing.

I also drove the car in manual but the rattle was still there just when your about to come to a stop. That's were I believe my gearbox could be the issue as when the gears lower down and get to D2, that's when the rattle could be heard.

It sounds like two metal pieces are touching against each other. Calipers have been looked at and they all seem perfect. Brake pads and discs also perfect too.

Now when I was driving back from Skoda today, when I was turning right or left I can now hear a humming noise. To me that sound could be the wheel bearings about to go or maybe already gone.

Just hoping when I hand car back to Skoda on the 26th September they can find the issue and hoping it's covered part of the warranty.

It was up to about 2012 that the Cattle Grid rattle was common with Fabia Mk2 vRS.   Dealership staff said they all did that, us with ones that did not felt cheated.

Why could we not all have the fault.

Since then not common on new DQ200's.   Heat shields are though.   Broken bracket on the downpipe with Twinchargers was common as well.

That is the exact sound I hear in The first link you sent on low gear.

Have you physically checked your pads yourself for movement within their carriers? Obviously the wheels would need to come off to do so. I once owned a car that had a low speed rattle, especially over speed bumps. It was the pads, replaced them then the noise disappeared. Although I could physically move the pads a mm or so up and down within their carriers, obviously with the car jacked up and foot off the brake.

Yes the pads have been looked at as well and definitely not the issue regards to the rattle.

Can anyone tell me what parts are covered under the warranty?

I don't have any paperwork from Skoda when I bought the car.

Wheel bearings, suspension arms, steering parts, gearbox and so on included in Warranty?
