Wheel refurbishment recommendations

Featured Replies

Now I'm p***sed off with living in the boondocks!

Hit the same rock with both n/s wheels this afternoon. 😱😭🤬

From the prices I've seen, refurbing the wheels to factory condition might be more expensive than buying new ones. Thinking of powder coating them a nice grey instead.

Anyone have any recommendations for the Abergavenny area? DSC_0486.thumb.JPG.4db9cf5b64e2bf00fc0fb7fe01d9b545.JPGDSC_0485.thumb.JPG.af9b912911867e703fb5885a8e7511eb.JPG

That is why in most other countries, 17" wheels are very popular on the Octavia MK3 VRS instead of 18" wheels.

The extra sidewall height makes the rims far more resistant to pothole damage.

I suggest you sell your remaining good wheels one at a time (ie. singley), as this is a very common problem...so plenty of buyers out there looking to replace their pothole damaged wheels.

Ah! The inevitable sound of the soapbox climber!! (who also can't understand a simple statement)

I didn't hit a pothole, I hit a rock. - "Hit the same rock with both n/s wheels this afternoon"  (was that too difficult to understand?)

18's are standard on the vrs because they're the best tyre/wheel combo for the car, and according to the link you sent, there are more options for 18's than 17's.

Thanks for mansplaining what 'one at a time' means, I was having difficulty there.

Anyhoo, yes it is a lot more expensive to repair them than buy new ones, so once I've moved from the boondocks to civilisation I'll just be buying two more wheels for almost the price of one repair!

17's? Why do you want to drive around on a doughnut? 🤣😂🤣

@Carlston will not reveal what he drives or on which tyres / sizes even though i am truly interested and nosy. Bi-curious.

I'm getting my Fabia 17" wheels fully refurbished tomorrow at TWS (The  Wheel Specialist) Durham, I have 2 previous vehicle wheels refurbished by them and very pleased each time

@CrucianI went to TWS Cwmbran today, seemed like a very good operation, unfortunately the quote they gave me was more than the new price of the wheels 🙁

Thats rubbish, I hate damaging stuff like that! Have you asked for a price breakdown? The refurb bit of sorting the wheels I didn't think was that expensive, guessing its the repair/truing side.

I paid £360 very recently for my 19"s to be 'refurbished' in gloss black. That included removing wheels, removing tyres, stripping, any repair of kerbing and powdercoating. The cost was the same for a gunmetal grey, but I know there are costlier options if you don't want powdercoating.

I hope you get it sorted!

@DoogeOne wheel needs to be welded before it can be re finished (they're diamond cut), so that's the £200 one, the other one has damage that's too deep and so will only be able to be repaired once, and it will have to be rounded off a bit cos of the depth of the damage. The £400 they quoted was for me just dropping the car off and then doing all the stuff you said, so it's probly reasonable!. Price per diamond cut refurb is £140, and the wheels cost £140 ish new - so it's probly not worth it!

Yeh that makes sense, pointless throwing money at repair If new is the same! What wheels are they out of curiosity?
