15 inch alloy wheel in spare space ?

Featured Replies

I don't have a spare 15 inch alloy wheel, so does anyone know if one would fit into the space in the boot, please ?

Somehow my new-to-me Fabia has had 15 inch alloys with 185 65 tyres  fitted in the past, and I have just discovered there's a 14 inch steel  with 185 60 rubber on it.  😞

thanks

Not off-hand, but did you not just say you have 4 185/65R15s on the road wheels? Try one of them?

  • Author

That would indeed be the best answer but I am trying to avoid moving the car off the sloping drive, and onto the road in order to take a wheel off and put it in the boot space, and then replace it.  Best part of 45 minutes work...

Yes it should fit but you'll need to remove the centre cap.

What specification are the 15" alloy rims that are fitted?

If you find out, you might be able to get a matching 15" steel rim, ie. same width and offset.

The 15" rims that the Fabia MK2 normally uses have a specification of 6Jx15 ET43 which you can see in the chart below. As you will see, there are three different steel rim sizes that the Fabia MK2 uses, 5Jx14 ET35, 6Jx14 ET37, 6Jx15 ET43. The 5Jx14 would normally use the 165/70R14 tyre size, the 6Jx14 would normally use the 185/60R14 tyre size, and the 6Jx15 would normally use the 195/55R15 tyre size. The outside diameter of a 185/65R15 tyre is a massive 7.6% bigger than 185/60R14, although a more reasonable 4.4% bigger than 195/55R15. As long as the 185/65R15 doesn't rub (including on full steering lock) and you are happy that the gearing, especially 1st gear and top gear isn't too high. However, 185/65R14 would have been a better choice than 185/65R15 as it keeps the gearing standard, and can be fitted to either of the two standard 14" rims.

Note that 6Qxxxxxxxx is the same OEM part number as 6Qxxxxxxxx 03C. The 03C is simply the associated colour code, and the OEM part number can be quoted with or without this final 3-digit colour code. Most people don't bother adding the 3-digit colour code to the OEM part number, because adding the 3-digit colour code makes the already long OEM part number even longer.

There are at least 20 different specifications of VAG steel rims that would fit the Fabia MK2, ie. PCD 5/100, Centre bore 57.1, including:

The OEM Spare wheels for a Mk2 Fabia fit in the spare tyre well. 185/60 R 15 or 195/55 R 15.

A 17" Gigaro with a 205/40 R 17 or even a 215/40 R 17 fits in.

185/60R15 isn't an OEM size on the Fabia MK2, although I expect it would fit in the spare wheel well because the outside diameter is only 7.5mm more than the 195/55R15 tyre size.

@Carlston

Keep up at the back. I never said it was.  I posted about what fitted, not the cars wheel / tyre sizes.

It is an OEM sized 'Spare Wheel' that came with Fabia Mk2 cars. That or a 195/55 R 15.

Clue.

The 185/60 R 15 spare sitting in the spare tyre well of a Mk2 vRS which comes as standard with 205/40 R 17 tyres.

The 185/60R15 (which was fitted to a 6Jx15 ET38 rim) didn't come out until the Fabia MK3, so couldn't have been OEM on the Fabia MK2.

@Carlstonthanks for that.

I must be having a false memory of them being in there pre Mk3 Fabia then.

 Still fits, and they were selling them as Spare Wheels for Fabia Mk2 2008-2014. but that must have been after 2014 then.

It's possible people were using 185/60R15 size tyres as spares before the Fabia MK3 came out, but it wouldn't have been fitted to the same style of 6Jx15 ET38  steel rim that the Fabia MK3 uses, because that wasn't available until the Fabia MK3 came out. One of the benefits of the 185/60R15 tyre size was the lower price compared to the 195/55R15 tyre size.

@Carlston  Possible is good enough.  Actually is even better.

They were on cars and in boots regardless of all the scores on the doors & any 'official information on your databases'..

If you were to visit a Skoda Dealership  pre 2015 you might have seem them sitting inside the door on offer as a set.

That is in Scotland anyway.

FASCINATING stuff indeed!

OP, about your question, YES is the answer OK.

Could the choice of non-standard 185/60R15 over standard 195/55R15 on the Fabia MK2 have anything to do with price? ie. lower price on 185/60R15 compared to 195/55R15. Although the 185/60R15 would give a better ride, and slightly better mpg due to slightly less drag being a narrower tyre.

Could they have been the Optional Spare for 1.4 Twinchargers 2009-2014 rom VW, SEAT & Audi that came on 215/40 R 17 tyres and without a spare as standard?

With the Polo GTI there was a Battery Cover to buy and a spare wheel.

The VW Polo MK5 came out years before the Fabia MK3.

The VW Polo MK5 used the same 185/60R15 tyre size fitted to the same 6Jx15 ET38 rims that the later Fabia MK3 used, so maybe VAG dealers started selling the VW Polo MK5 spare wheel as a spare wheel for the Fabia MK2. 185/60R15 (fitted to 6Jx15 ET38 rims) was likely a cheaper spare wheel option than 195/55R15 (fitted to 6Jx15 ET43 rims).

If a Fabia MK2 owner was using non-standard and oversize (bigger outside diameter) 215/40R17 tyres, then 185/60R15 would have been a good match to the outside diameter of the 215/40R17 tyres (closer than 195/55R15).

Exactly,

Ibiza Cupra 1.4 TSI was launched 2009 & the Polo GTI 1.4 TSI 2010 with 215/40 R 17 Tyres and the Fabia Mk2 vRS in 2010 with 205/40 R17's

They stayed in production to 2014.

They sold them as Winter wheel / tyre sets with winter tyres fitted, as well as spares.

Wow !  Thanks everyone for the techy information.  As luck happens, I now have access to a small domestic garage with a flat floor, so later today I shall go down the empirical "try it and see if it fits" route.

Still bemused by a Skoda dealer who can sell a used vehicle with a spare wheel and tyre socket lever that does not match the road wheels !  It could have landed me in trouble with the fuzz if I had a puncture.  All being sorted, including a new extending tyre lever with a socket to match the alloy wheel nuts and now to buy a matching alloy wheel and spare tyre... Ebay here I come..

One lives and learns about the importance of small details.

@Sheepdog

Have a look in BRISKODA for sales adverts for a spare.

Often someone selling or trading in a car will keep their good spare and put in whatever they have, or a dealer will,

or a Skoda Dealership will sell a spare not that well suited to the vehicle.

The Spare was a little under the size of the 4 tyres / wheel.  Did you sit them side by side to see how much smaller?

As an Emergency Spare tyre to get you to a place of safety or repair / replace the 'Officers' would really not bother as you kept your speed down.

A matching alloy is good, but if the tyre is not matching, tread, new not used and the pressure when you take it out is higher for storage then you still need to slow down with it on.

Just so no accidents and police / insurance involvement.

?

Did you use these, and did you not try one in the boot / spare tyre well?
