Winter wheels

Featured Replies

Hi.

In anticipation of getting my new car in the next few months, I'll be thinking about getting some winter wheels and tyres, so could anyone point me in the right direction when it comes to rims and sizes please.

TIA

  • 17” winter wheels certainly fitted over the 340mm front discs on my previous Kodiaq.

  • The speedo won’t” be out” fitting 17” wheels with the correct tyres. As you can see the overall diameter/ circumference difference is negligible.

Is this for Guildford and area?

is it 19's you have now so maybe going to 18's with All Season tyres for as bad as it gets in your area, or are you crossing the Channel and maybe needing 'Winter tyres'?

Standard tyre sizes on the Octavia MK4:

Michelin CrossClimate 2 205/60R16 96V XL (Euro label B B 69dB) £114.40

Michelin CrossClimate 2 205/55R17 95V XL (Euro label B B 69dB) £123.00

Michelin CrossClimate 2 225/45R18 95Y XL (Euro label C B 71dB)  £157.45

Michelin CrossClimate 2 225/40R19 93Y XL (Euro label C B 71dB) £167.60

I suggest you look at the 16" and 17" options rather than the 18" and 19" options. The 16" and 17" options are far more comfortable, make less noise, more mpg, and are cheaper.

If you've got 340mm diameter front discs, then 17" rims will be the minimum size.

If you like to fit non-standard tyre sizes, then there are lots of options such as:

Michelin CrossClimate 2 225/55R16 99V XL (Euro label B B 71dB) £138.70

Does the latest Octavia have direct TPMS? You might need to factor in, 4 tyre pressure sensors as well.

Skoda handily produce a brochure with all the wheels, with pictures, and it says the tyre sizes.   It has both Octavia mk 3 and mk 4 (confusingly using Roman numerals III and IV, so don’t think it is hybrid iV version)

https://www.skoda.co.uk/_doc/639a0118-4da5-446b-a786-86e1f789b57b

Always worth asking your dealer if they will either swap them to something in the brochure (and keep the factory ones with whatever tyres comes with) or if they can order rims, get internet tyres delivered to them and they will fit them for you.

When I bought winter wheels (rims and tyres) got them from Reifen.com in Germany as they were much cheaper (but it was 3 years ago before Brexit, when there was no import VAT hassle).

Although there is the minor inconvenience (about hour at home, twice a year) of swapping the wheels. It has the advantage of allowing regular swapping front-back so probably won’t need to buy any other new tyres until 60k+ miles.  As long as there is at least 4mm tread I put the most worn on the back to even out the wear (but wouldn’t recommend it with heavily worn tyres as might get sideways tail slide).  Another bonus is not using summer tyres in winter seems to stop them from cracking after 3-4 years.

@TheWanderer  Do you think the delivery of your car will happen before winter 2022/23 has come and gone?

It doesn't. It's through ABS sensors.

Just wondered as my Kodiaq has the direct TPMS , thought latest Octavia might have as well.

I live up in the Surrey Hills, the road upto the house is about 1:7 , also the route to work has several hills on it, so winter tyres would be the best option as so to cover "all the bases" and it's an RS I'm getting so the small wheel rims aren't an option, I'd have thought that the minimum would be 18" rims and tyres.

Been told that I could expect it either in December or January so middle of winter. I may be jumping the gun on it, but nature has a nasty way of levelling up after exceptionally warm weather.

Winter certainly does have a habit of being after the Festive season in the south and having an affect on all those un-ploughed and untreated roads that Asda, Tesco, Sainsburry, Morrison's home delivery vans are out on.

With 340 mm front discs, you may find that 17' wheels will fit depending upon the design.   I'd be inclined to borrow a 17 or two and try them for size.

Thanks but I don't want to import them as I'd have to pay significant carriage fees, also VAT and Import fees as well.

camskill are based in the UK. However, I was using that website to give examples. There are plenty of other tyre sellers in the UK and it's always worth shopping around for the best price and service.

Depends on the company, I have just checked the one I used and I think you avoid the 19% German VAT, but pay the 17.5% UK VAT instead.  Seem to have a bulk rate with a parcels carrier (from memory mine arrived by DPD) and the carriage was only €4.95 per complete wheel, which is not a significant carriage fee.   It took about 2 weeks (in busy season) to make up the wheels and tyres, fully balanced etc, and about 5-6 days from dispatch to delivery.

Back in November 2019 it was £1=€1.16, so not that different to current rate of 1.12

It is worth checking as some UK companies seem to be anything upto 50% more expensive which is lot more than the carriage and import fee.   And if they have put an English option on the German website it is just as easy to order as a website in UK.   I sensibly chose a tyre that was newly launched so knew I wouldn’t get old stock, and the tyre choice was much wider (and in stock, unlike most UK websites)

I totally get your concerns about importing, but if you are saving £50+ per wheel it is hard to justify spending hundreds more just to buy a foreign made tyre from a British retailer.

Interesting knowing that the new Kodiaq has the TPMS. Since as far as I know Skoda ditched this some years ago on all models.

On the subject of wheels, my car has the

ROTARE wheels 17inch

205/55 R17 -

Any know if i can put bigger tyres on ? i.e 215 55 r17? or whats the biggest for this rim? Any suggestions please 🙂

225/50R17 would work really well on the 7Jx18 ET46 rim.

225/50R17 is a cheaper and more common tyre size than the 225/45R18 tyre size.

225/50R17 fitted to a 7J rim will be noticeably more comfortable than 225/45R18 fitted to a 7.5J rim.

The below tyre would work well in the summer, ie. it's not a winter or all-season tyre as it doesn't have the 3PMSF symbol, so has limited traction in the snow. For best comfort it's important to avoid UHP summer tyres or other tyres that could have stiff sidewalls, and not to over-specify the tyre's load index or speed index. Using a 98 load index instead of a 94 load index will make the tyre's sidewalls stiffer and therefore the ride harder. Using V, W, Y speed indexes if you only need H will again make the sidewalls stiffer and therefore the ride harder. Notice that the below Michelin has a remarkably low noise rating, only 68dB. Using 225 tyres instead of 205 tyres can sometimes increase the noise levels, but the below tyre was carefully chosen by Audi as standard fitment to one of its cars.

If you are going to use the tyres all year round and need good winter performance in snow and cold rain, it would be better to look at all-season tyres, as they work much better than summer tyres when the temperature drops below about 7 degrees Centigrade.

https://www.blackcircles.com/catalogue/michelin/primacy-3/225/50/R17/H/94/m?tyre=35021323

Michelin winter tyres will often last considerably longer than most other brands of winter tyres, ie. more miles before they wear out.

Michelin Alpin 6 225/50R17 94H (Euro label D B 69dB) Winter tyres

https://www.camskill.co.uk/m97b0s1472p158249/Michelin_Tyres_Winter_Snow_Car_Michelin_Alpin6_Michelin_Alpin_6_-_225_50_R17_94H_TL_Fuel_Eff_%3A_D_Wet_Grip%3A_B_NoiseClass%3A_A_Noise%3A_69dB

For the 225/50R17 tyre size, 7Jx17 ET45 alloy rims from the Octavia MK3 and Yeti could be used instead of the 7Jx17 ET46 rims from the Octavia MK4. The specification of these rims are almost identical with just a 1mm different in ET number, ie. ET45 instead of ET46. This is so close, that when fitted you wouldn't notice the difference.

If I can find the funds the wheels will be 18"ers, not going for the 17s, too tight clearances and the speedo is going to out as well, so I'll stick with the 18"ers

The speedo won’t” be out” fitting 17” wheels with the correct tyres. As you can see the overall diameter/ circumference difference is negligible.

There is about 4-5mm difference between new tread and worn tyres (which equates to 8-10mm diameter difference) so there is no point in even thinking about a 2mm diameter difference.

Winter tyres often have deeper treads (7.5mm - 8mm) so overall difference might turn out to be under a mm

In Germany (which has rather faster roads than we do), the vRS comes with 18 inch or 19 inch wheels so don’t worry about the smaller size not being ideal

Based on personal experience I would avoid the combination of 16" + winter tyres + Octavia MK4. I drove a dealer's demo car (Octavia MK4, hatch, 1.0 TSI, sport suspension) which had 16" rims and Nokian R2 Hakkapeliitta tyres (these are high quality top 3 reviewed winter tyres) and the combination of the soft suspension (even with factory sport suspension) of the Octavia MK4 and the softness of 16" winter tyres made the car very unpredictable and thus felt dangerous to drive. I've also driven Octavia MK4s with 17" and 18" winter tyres and they felt MUCH more predictable and safe to drive.

Personally, after reading several reviews of different winter tyres, I opted for the Goodyear Ultragrip Ice 2 SoundComfort Tech FP 225/50R17 98T. I've used them for one winter and I am very pleased with their performance.

Most of the tire reviews I've checked recently, especially for the choice I have to make on MK4 winter tires, are usually placing Michelin Alpin 5 (not 6) on first place, second or ~equal to Michelin would be  the Continental WinterContact TS 870 P, followed in general by Bridgestone Blizzak LM 005 or Hankook. Those positions are slightly changing from test to test, or from 2021 to 2022...
