Aaagh - Warning light on!! (Vrs)

Featured Replies

Hi.

On the way home this evening I pulled into a Petrol Station and when I started up and pulled away the warning light with a picture of an engine stayed on. It seemed to be running OK with no missing (all coilpacks have been replaced) I pulled in and had a look at the engine. Nothing seemed to be amiss, so I've gingerly driven home. The only thing I've noticed is that when I start up, the rev counter drops quite slowly from 2000rpm to about 1000-1200, which is a bit on the high side for idling. If it was a 'proper' engine with a carb I'd expect it to be running hot and have an air leak on the inlet side (or a stuck piston with an SU carb), but it doesn't seem to be running hot.

Apart from the fast idling and warning light on, there doesn't seem to be any other problem. The book says it's OK to run with this light on "with certain restrictions" but consult a Skoda specialist. _Is_ it OK to run - what are the "certain restrictions"? Ideas, anyone?

In the morning I'll 'phone my dealer!"

Jim,

I suspect you'll find the restrictions are those imposed by the ECU until you get the fault sorted.

The warning light in question is, i beleive, the Engine Electronics warning. Probably a duff sensor or something.

The errant Mr Panrix (wherever he may be...) had this warning not so long ago, it turned out to be his Lambda sensor.

Get it booked in, unless someone nearby has a Vag-Com :)

I think the 'certain restrictions' are that whichever direction you're facing, make sure it's towards a dealer.

Could just be a faulty sensor. This seems to be quite common with VAG cars. If the car feels 'lumpy' it could be the lamda probe in the cat confusing the engine management.

Or you've put deisel in...

Ever the optimist eh Rich ? ;)

You sod, you beat me to it. The only bloody thing on the whole car I know anything about and you got there first. :(

:stupid:

In the interests of fair play I think you should delete your posts and go somewhere else and talk about Jabba or something.

Are we helping Jim?

Get her with her 'threads she mentioned earlier'.

Thanks for the help - if it's probably just a sensor I'll use it for work until I can get it booked in for diagnosis later this week. As the engine control wil be questionable, I'll keep the engine load down.

I've seen the occasional reference to the VAG-Com diagnostic software and I feel that this will be something I'll ultimately need when the warranty expires and I do my own maintenance. This is the first car I've had in over 40 years of motoring where I've not done my own maintenance - I've never trusted any of my other cars to a garage, but the warranty requires that I do so with this car.

Where can the VAG-Com software be obtained and what is the min spec laptop - I've got a 120MHz pentium laptop spare?

Thing is Jim it could be just a faulty sensor. I know we're messing about but if I were you I'd get it checked ASAP. It doesn't take five minutes for them to check the codes.

Jim,

The info on Vag-Com is here

http://www.vag-com.co.uk/

As Rich says, get it checked ASAP, its more than likely a duff sensor, but you never know.

This may sound daft but have you checked the filler cap? I am by no means an expert on 1.8T engines, but some OBD (on board diagnostics systems) check for vapour leaks in the fuel system - if the cap isn't fitted correctly the warning light comes on. As the light only stayed on after refuelling that would be my first check.

Other than that I'd agree with the others and check the diagnostics...

Hi.

Latest update:

Took my Vrs into my dealer who ran diagnostics on it, but couldn't find anything wrong. The stored error apparently related to a coolant problem, but there was no other evidence of a problem. This roughly ties in with my initial feeling that the engine, whilst not obviously running hot, showed some of the symptoms. They said it must have been just a 'glitch' and cleared the stored error! All seems to be OK now - but I'm keeping my fingers crossed!

Jim,

I had this problem my self a few months back, it was a faulty temp sender, giving a high current reading I believe.

The symptoms where; Get home from work after a 30min drive, then get back in the car an hour of so later to go out and the warning light would appear.

Took the car to the dealer on my way to work and they'd clear the fault code, 'sporadic cooling system error'.

A week later the fault was back. Dealer diagnosed a faulty temp sender and replaced, along with the coil packs as I recall.

No problems since, other than two punctured rear tyres and a bill for 200 notes!!!

Mike
