DSG hesitation - just me?

Featured Replies

Hi, I have a 1.5 auto hatch back.  Had it from new in 2018 and was convinced when I first got it that there was something wrong with how the gear box worked when pulling away from stationary or very slow.  Even without the stop/start thing, it was always too slow to move and to compensate I'd push the accelerator harder leading to a sudden lurch forward.  Only ever a second or so, but enough to mean that I can't judge what gap I might be able to pull in to.  There was some sort of recall or update thing about the DSG that got done at the first service and my perception was that the hesitation problem was reduced.  But now, 4 years in to ownership I'm sure its back.   Does that seem familiar to anyone else?

Its a big car with a small engine on an auto so maybe its normal?  My other car is a Mini manual and my previous car was electric so maybe its just a perception thing?  I have to pull out of my small residential street on to a busy 40mph road every day and this issue just feels constant - I can't take gaps that I take without thinking when I'm driving the Mini.

How does it feel in terms of hesitation? Like it's slow to take up drive, juddery, or like it's bogging down?

@Paul211075There was indeed a Software Update and it was a DVLA Safety Critical recall.

Check with Skoda or a main dealership if there has been another 'Recall Action' or update available.

*** Make sure you are reporting to a Main Dealership & Skoda UK that the car is behaving as it is.

there might still be issues needing addressed, but they can say, 'never heard anyone complaining, we dealt with the issues with the Recall.***

How many miles on the car now?

Maybe time for a spark plug replacement.

Thanks for the comments.

Its not juddering or anything, probably the best way to put it is to say that it feels like it takes a couple of seconds to work out which gear it wants to select - then by the time it decides I've had my foot down a bit so it suddenly jumps forwards.

Its at about 34K miles (lots of sitting around unused through covid).  Its just had a full service which I know included spark plugs because I had to wait overnight for them to get delivered to the garage.  Just been on the website with my VIN and it says no outstanding recalls.

Cheers

Common issue across the petrol range.  The resolution is to by a Throttle controller like the Pedal Box or EVC throttle controller.  I've bought the EVC one and its made such a difference, the throttle response is near instant depending on setting.

TBH it's a must for the Superb TSI.  I'm assuming as the diesel range has more torque low down it doesnt suffer as much.

Wat ur feeling is not "normal".

The 1.4 uses the dry 7 speed DSG box (DQ200) - it is very unrefined, harsh and has been subject to recalls over the past few years.

The bigger engines get paired with the wet 6 speed DSG box (DQ250), and now the new wet 7 speed DSG box (DQ381).

Thanks all.  I’m due back for disks and pads this month so I’ll ask the dealer to confirm that it’s up to dates for recalls etc and doing what the auto box does as standard.  Then, assuming no improvement, I’ll get all brave and whizzy with a throttle controller.
Thanks again.

Paul

@JR RS The OP has 1.4 TSI to the left in their signature, but has a 1.5 TSI ACT.

Still a DQ200 DSG when a FWD Skoda.  ( The 1.5 TSI AWD's got a DQ381.)

So the engines got a Software Update when recalled,

but there were also 1.5 TSI with a DQ200 that needed a DSG Software update, and some needed 2 carried out.

When I ordered it it was the 1.4 but I think that my order went in just as they were doing the switch over and I think that I got the 1.5 as an automatic upgrade.  The fact that I’m not sure what size engine I’ve had for 4 years would suggest that I’m not a typical buyer of throttle controllers!    The Skoda website says my VIN doesn’t attach to any further recalls - but I will press the dealer when I’m getting my brakes done.  I did get something done early on with one of the services (not sure if it was a recall or just an update).  It made a difference to the hesitation but 4 years on, I’m struggling with it.

Thanks

paul

Are you checking this VIN checker.   If so it is hopeless, There can be TPI's and software updates and nothing shows there.

http://skoda-auto.com/services/recall-actions

The 2nd Recall in 2017 on DQ200's 2013-2015 never showed there, or the World Wide Recall 2012 that excluded Europe until 2014 when a Recall Action Service campaign was called.

Not a RECALL.

That was the one I checked.

I guess that:

Dear customer,
No relevant recall campaigns have been launched by ŠKODA for the entered VIN TMBBN7np9k7035428.

is not as reassuring as I might have hoped.   I'll get as pushy as I can with the dealer's garage when I'm back there before I go looking at throttle controllers.

Cheers

Paul
