PR number & brake pad disc fitting cost

Featured Replies

Folks where can I find the PR number for my vehicle. I have a 2019 VRS needs new front and rear pads and discs. I obviously need to get the right parts.
cheers. Also can anyone give me a ballpark figure for getting them fitted independent & dealer.  I’ve been quoted over £700 for front and rear by independent specialist!!

Can’t find the Skoda price list, but sister company, Seat, charge (per page 9 on link)

£159 -179 front pads

£339 - 409 front pads and discs

£159 rear pads

£ 339 rear pads and discs

Are you sure you need new front discs, unless they are warped, not likely to have worn down on a 3 year old car, even if pads have worn.

I wouldn't be surprised if new front discs are required. Modern pads wear disc much more rapidly than older asbestos-containing pads. I can't remember having only pads on any of my cars in at least the last decade. To be sure, measure the thickness of the pad and check with recommended minimum.

The garage that did the gearbox and haldex service sent a video doing a health check. And according to the mechanic that did it the fronts were 1mm off the minimum thickness. Although he wasn’t holding a micrometer? To it at the time, and I don’t have one to check them. There’s a slight lip to them as well

The 340x30mm front discs have a minimum thickness of 27mm.

The 310x22mm rear discs have a minimum thickness of 20mm.

To say 1mm off the minimum thickness is really sloppy. I would take measurements to the nearest 0.1mm not the nearest 1mm.

For example, what were the measurements taken on the front discs. There's a big difference between 27.5mm and 28.5mm. 28.5mm and you would probably just fit new brake pads. 27.5mm and you would probably change the discs.

Bear in mind that changing pads and discs is easy and profitable work for a mechanic, and there's a lot of overselling going on.

Video just says min 27mm and mine are 28mm . I’d do them myself as I’ve changed pads and discs before on a number of vehicles V70 5 series etc but time is the issue and My drive is on a slight slope so its a right pain!

If the thickness of the front discs is actually more like 28.5mm then just change the brake pads. If they really are 28.0mm (to the nearest 0.1mm) then change the discs as well.

Most digital calipers can measure to one-hundedth of a millimetre, so there really shouldn't be any problem measuring to the nearest tenth of a millimetre.

I've recently done discs and pads at both ends on ours.  Because of the lip, you either need to take the lip off locally, with a file and put verniers on there, or you need to use a micrometer that can reach over the lip.  My fronts weren't near minimum thickness (2017 car with 35,000 on it), but there was a slight vibration, so I changed them anyway.

There's no need to remove the lip with a file before measuring with digital calipers.

Just use something like a couple of magnets to measure the thickness of the disc including the thickness of the magnets. Then deduct the thickness of the magnets to get the thickness of the disc.

Or if you haven't got magnets, use something else such as a couple of coins. That way, the digital calipers will be able to reach over the lip without the lip affecting the measurement.

Quicker to just give it a couple of licks with a file!  I'd have thought that was easier (and more accurate) than trying to wedge coins in each side between the jaws?
