Dealer used different oil to handbook

Featured Replies

Hi everyone,

My car has recently been in for its yearly service at the main dealer and for some unknown reason they have used 0W-20 engine oil instead of the recommended 5W-30 that was used in previous years.

The vehicle is a 2016 1.2 TSi CJZC.

Has anyone else experienced the same and is there any reason to worry?

The generic information I can see online seems to suggest that there's no problem with this provided the oil level is checked regularly - of course this advice isn't specific to this engine type.

Looking forward to hearing your opinions on this

@TSiTorque It is good if you have a handbook that shows the oil spec for your car.

Lots of posts on the internet are about Owners Manuals not showing the oil and referring you to a Main Dealers.

?

Does your manual say VW 504 00 / 507 00 for Variable or Flexible servicing or VW502 00 for fixed servicing?

you want you can ask them to change it for the correct oil if concerned,

VW 504 00 / 507 00  so 5w 30 FS III.

The VW508 00 / 509 00 / 0w 20 FS IV is not back compatible according to VW Group so Skoda.

They might say that with a Euro 6 1.2 TSI it is compatible so ask them to get the Master Tech to put that in writing if concerned.

Not the service manager.

This shows from 2015.

Well it does but then again not fully, the "German engineering excellence" is rather restrained in the Owner's Manual, as well as on the cars, yes it's VW 504 00 for fixed servicing, this is from my wife's 2015 book (p153). -

And in keeping with VWs or warning messages. -

Possibly TSiTorque is like me more used to Driver's Handbooks that give more comprehensive information.

@nta16 VW502 00 for fixed servicing as you just showed.

& VW504 00 for Variable / Flexible or fixed if you want, as not shown.     VW 502 00 being something UK Main Dealers stopped offering a while back in the main.

@TSiTorque I can see a 0w-30, 502 00 but it's a good oil so more expensive than I would expect a VW/Skoda garage to be using unless they got some kind of deal to clear stock from the blender or supplier, I don't know if VW Porker Dealerships might use it, I doubt it.  There's a 0w-40 but not by a blender I'd guess is used over here by the Dealers but I could be wrong I often am.

There more to the oil change than even just the oil specification or it viscosity weight range but if you are leaving it to a garage they control the oil and other factors, you can keep the frequency/regularity of the changes though.

missing word

Lots of dealers use 0w 30 FS III oil, that is VW504 00. It is Long Life Oil for Variable / flexible servicing or Fixed.

It is not VW502 00.

(5w 40 FS to VW502 00 will do the MPI just fine,

and VW 504 00 will likely as well.   but that is another thread on here.)

** I would just not use the Long Life oil on any pre GPF TSI i had as a keeper**  Certainly not 0w 20 FS IV / VW508 00.

No, well Dealerships didn't write the Owner's Manuals.

Must admit I forgot.

Toot, I meant there is a VW 502 00 spec 0w-30 oil available and I didn't really expect VW/Skoda Dealership would be using it or getting a deal on it, just trying to stretch to the 0w-20.  I'm sure every VW/Skoda UK Dealership always uses the finest oils they can get their hands on.  😊

@TSiTorque just remembered what I forgot to put - do you know for certain they've used 0w-20, have they told you this or is it what is written on the invoice?

It's stated on the invoice "longlife IV 0W-20 5L"

Thanks to everyone for sharing your thoughts. It has made for an interesting read.

I must admit, the warning to avoid using this oil in a pre-GPF engine is somewhat concerning. Why exactly I wonder? 🤔

I'm not seeing any difference in the way the engine behaves at this point that would point to imminent destruction. Oil pressure light switches off same time after startup, quiet running and zero oil consumption 500 miles later. Nothing unusual.

Unfortunately, I don't think the dealer will be interested in swapping the oil for the correct spec (even if I'd raised this on the day). I too suspect they are using the latest spec and no longer stock anything else, hence my experience.

It will be interesting to see if anybody else reports the same over the coming months

@TSiTorque The not using Long Life Oil in TSI engine keepers is my ridiculous belief based on VW Groups history of some euro 5 emissions and lass than long lives.

The premature demise and oil use of some not that old or high mile engines.

Their denial over the past decade.

But they build and sell millions on the 1.2, 1.4, 1.8 and 2.0 tsi's that only a small percentage of failed, and that is overblown on social media.

'They say'.

So use what they recommend as they were the biggest car manufacturer in the world of cars.

Never cheated, never lied, never got caught and did not lose that spot.     If everything in the world was as reliable as a Volkswagen we would be right in the sh-it.

Why have VW Group some of the highest number of engine failures out of warranty compared to even French or Japanees, North Korean engine manufacturers.

Is it they use and recommend other oils, consumables, or just use better materials / components, engineers, manufacturing, software / engine management and if they get things wrong they deal with it and produce better products.   Vorsprung durch technik.  NEIN!

Could that just be a typo error (or prefilled format), have they actually said that is what was put into your engine.

@toot is 0w-16 used over here, my wife's 2015 car is the latest car we have, and are probably ever likely to have so I know even less about moderns than I do my previous car.

0w 16 would very likely have been VW's default position if they had not got the WLTP / RDE2 results and certification,

Vorsprung durch technik,  do what you have to do to keep flogging cars, finance / loans and stay in business, if the products just have a short life then worry about that later,

spend on Media / Advertising / Spin and lawyers more than on Engineering & R&D.

@toot careful, you might feel bad if Skoda/VW/VAG business goes a bit pop, you'll think of the good times then. 😄

  • 2 months later...

0W20 should not be used in your engine. It is not backwards compatible. It will be easy to tell if they have used this oil because it is green in colour. They may have just booked the wrong oil to the job. This oil is more expensive though. I would be straight back to dealer getting correct oil.
