MK3 245 vrs reliability? Skoda still quality?

Featured Replies

I've been looking at the 2019 245 version, but it seems like there abit ropey? Can anyone confirm? :(.

I don't want to go down this road again after what's happened with my Skoda Fabia monte Carlo 11. Plus were talking 20k here.

cheers.

Like everything if you don't know what it is you will likely not miss it.  I have a FL230 without VAQ and I can't say I miss the option (I don't know how it feels to have it).  That said I'm not wanti

I have a 2018 245 VRS.

Been great so far.

Love the car.

@Mattyboy91

Where are you hearing about them being a bit ropey.

Is it on forums, in magazines or from some VW / Skoda Tech or a mechanic, or other sources?

Those who know nothing about them.

Plenty owners and past owners on here.

The Car needs to have been Serviced properly, DSG & VAQ done when due etc.

Raced or Rallied or booted occasionally not an issue really.   It is only a Big Warn Hatch after all.

Fabia 1.6 TDI Euro 6 Defeat Device Skoda emission cheaters are a whole other kettle of fish.  VW Group disgrace.

PS

Buyers of newer Octavia and other Skoda's need be 'Buyer Beware' because VW Group took IT in house, and are penny pinching unbelievably.

Then in total denial when there are issues with Build / Quality Control.  Poor Dealership responses.

Been reading the forums really, I can't see too many complaints so that fills me with confidence. Faiths abit shaken really.

People usually only head to forums to complain about issues, so that skews the numbers.

Nobody posts that their car is running well.

There are some websites (I think maybe HonestJohn?) that can potentially show the strengths and weakness of a particular car/model/year engine/gearbox combo.

Yeah that's true, was just looking to get more info, haven't seen too much deep info really that's all, I think 245 model is mechanically different in some ways and there seems to be more of them lacking features on the market.

People who are buying a keeper spec them as they want and might still own them so they are not going to Auction or back to Dealers or to traders.

The likes that might get advertised for sale on here.  Briskoda cars for sale.

Bad ones can get flogged, as in sold, WBAC, Motorway, just, punted / flogged, maybe flogged to death as a lease cars.

Rented and back and in the Motor Trade.

FMDSH which means nothing as Main Dealers might not Service to Manufacturers Recommendations, Guidelines or Schedules, even cars on a SERVICE PLAN.

Good ones traded in by members here might be advertised someplace and someone here can maybe vouch for that car.

I think the 245 is probably as good as they got in the mk3 as it was towards the end of the line. There are documented known issues with the Octavia platform and MQB platform in general such as creaky rear suspension, flatspotting rear tyres and creaky front topmounts. The EA888 is generally a reliable lump with known issues around waterpumps in this generation of engine and DSG failures are well known now if they arnt serviced every 40k.

But as others have said, it comes down to how the previous owners have used and abused it and sometimes low mileage isn't always a good thing.

I got my 245 new in Feb 2018 and it's really only been driven by myself so always warmed up properly, driven around road imperfections and parked miles away from the shop entrance. However I do enjoy a good blast now and then and it's towed our decent size caravan for the past 3 years so hasn't had an easy life. It's on 44k miles with full service history and has had ZERO faults.

Attempt to look for an unmodified or lightly modified example that's likely to have been owned by an enthusiast (x4 decent tyres, FSH at specialists, rear bumper protector, detailed ...?)

The only 'issue' is the lack of sound insulation, but that's VAG's fault not the Octavia's 😉

I'm off to test drive one today, it's from one of those quick sale places ike motorworld, so we'll see, the price is low so I'll find out why haha.

If the car has had Official Dealership servicing they can call that up, even though they are not VAG dealers.

As to the Service History the car does have, they know what they know as they bought the car.

Ask all the questions.  Get them to print out what they have and what they have done pre sales,

& are there 2 or 3 keys with the car.

VAQ due 3 years / 30,000 miles. Overdue if not done.

Thank you so much for taking the time to send that!.  Too sound like a noob, what does the VAQ stand for? ☺️

Post up the ad Matty, I'd be intrigued to have a look!

VAQ,

The trick front diff that Dealerships are saying servicing of is optional.   If it is fitted it needs oil changes.   Their brains seem to be missing a few options.

PS.

Forget all the Up-selling at Motor Choice or the likes.

'Paint protection Treatment' on a used car.     £30 or less of product and time multiplied by 10 sometimes in cost to you.

Tell them to deal with scratches and chips properly and polish or wax the car.

Not just do Kerb Side auto touch up / colour match that just wipes off.

Fabric protection on a used car.

A daft Warranty extension if a car has not got the correct service history, and they do not even know if remapped.

All of the above on the Finance and costing you a fortune and earning them a lovely commission.

Just double check are you saying I should avoid any extended warranties?

Buy it if the T&c,s are good and they are covering stuff that might not have been serviced properly but they supposedly checked, approved and sold you.   But once you have the salesperson all excited thinking they have a sale.  They have checked about your holiday, been to see their manager to get the best deal because you are a pal.   Walk. Say you can not sign today.    Then you ask for them to throw in the extended warranty and serviced plan at the original cars asking price without extras.   And do not put the VED on finance.    Just do a DVLA monthly DD.    Still go home and think about it.    And do not trade in a car.

Cheers, for once I'm in no rush, just got to contain my excitement. I'm expecting disappointment anyway as it's 2019 245, with 62k, for 15600. But in metallic grey ew. There must be something up.

Possibly.   They might say FSH.  So what is the history.   Were the spark plugs changed, the VAQ serviced.  The brake fluid changed.?   Doubt it or it would be at a Skoda dealership.   So I expect the wheels are rufurbbed.   Check which wheel has the odd one out tyre.  Maybe all are good.    Look for the body repair.   Check the spare.  Check the windscreen, chips, scratches, poor fit.  Even open the air filter box. Dip oil cold before car started.  Look at coolant level.  Is it very full.  Too full.   Wind them up.   If not enough petrol for a long road test ask then to put in petrol.   Or say you will put in a gallon because you are going for 30 miles.   They will love you.  Not.

So far, it's pretty horrendous lol no service history, 30k in 1 year. Bonnet didn't even close haha, he's had to take it round back to the mechanic. He said they do a service for me if I brought it.  Serviced at 29k, brake fluid and inspection, which I think is correct. Seems ok inside looks clean.

'Much Cheapness' is OK if you have mates rates or are in the trade.

After your last car and experience walk away.

Their Service is nothing, anyone can do that.

??

How did it drive / perform?

It drove well tbh but first time driving one. I went to see a 17 plate golf GTi but it had been sold on arrival and was on stilts, having the wheels done.

gave the octy some wellie responded well, gear box felt a little rough tbh especially 4th. Didn't feel like it should for a 19 car. No satnav not a deal breaker but the colour is horrendous, that silver.

Very cheap though and the body work does look good and alloys. The problem is I drove there In my gf citron c1, so it the contrast would sell anyone lol.

He said 1600 for the Fabia, he said if you can get it here he doesn't care. ( Straight to auction).

Edit * engine seemed hot after 20 mins of driving* is that normal?

Edited by Mattyboy91

Hi Matty, gearbox certainly should not feel 'rough' in any way (caution)

How hot did the engine get? Did you have oil temperature reading dialled up on the dot matrix display?
