Another Misfire Post

Featured Replies

Hi everyone,

I know this topic has been covered in some way or another to death and back, but I’ve not found a definitive answer after looking for quite some time.

My car is a 2013 CTHE Fabia with 57000 miles on the clock. I’ve had it for roughly 5 months and I originally suffered a misfire (a flashing EML) at idle shortly after buying. After doing some initial test drives and OBD2 scans I put it down to an isolated incident and forgot about it. However, after a kickdown acceleration today the car suffered a bad misfire and a flashing EML again, which revealed cylinder 2 and 4 suffering a misfire. No limp mode or anything afterwards though and the car seemed normal again.

I always fill up using Tesco Momentum so I wouldn’t put it down to fuelling. The spark plugs were also changed about 2-3 months before I bought it with Denso plugs so that should be fine. However, I have noticed quite high oil consumption (needing to use 1.5 litres in about 3000 miles).

The DSG gearbox appears to also be sluggish at the moment when changing between 4th and 5th (it feels like I’m completely lifting off the throttle at full power) and slight juddering when reversing, but unsure whether this is related.

Without doing much more diagnostics (I work full time and have a child so time is very short), is this pointing to a component which can be fixed with the engine and/or gearbox or more towards fundamental issues with the engine/gearbox?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated

Try swapping coil packs, 1-2 and 3-4 to see if the misfires change cylinders when it happens again.

What OBD2 software did you use for your initial scans. A VCDS scan should be considered a starting point as this should interrogate your gearbox as well as your engine and all its supporting functions, being VAG specific which most consider dealer level diagnostics.

Given the depth of knowledge on here regarding the DSG, you may want to start a separate post on the box issues with a title highlighting issues seen as this will give more clarity to replies - and assist in future searches.

Hi mate not saying this will be a one stop fix for yourself but a good fix is to fit an uprated plug (not the oem plug that Skoda/vw fit) in tandom with changing from standard coil packs to Audi R8 coil packs should fix any missfires that are not piston ring/ burnt valves related

My recent misfire (diagnosed with vcds by) was due to a faulty connector on coil no. 4 (locking clip broken), I replaced the plug and coil (as a precaution) all fine now. hope this helps

This has been the case on mine twice with coil pack 3 in the last 5 years

Plugs, coils or wiring to the coils.

Happy to say that this has all stopped after changing the coil packs and spark plugs - no issues with ignition since. For reference I went with OEM coil packs and spark plugs as the car is not modified.

The DSG issues also appear to have disappeared, but part of me thinks this is just me fearing the worst 😂

Thanks for your advice.

Give it a minute, the DSG will soon be malfunctioning again, it's their default state...

Such bad gearboxes.

With a Twincharger playing up and the engine not running right because of misfires and the Super Charger / Turbo not operating as they should when they should it is not unusual the DSG is going to behave differently.

Plenty have no issues with their DQ200 DSG's.  Others might need parts and repairs, but then Skoda manufacture more than 2,500 DQ200 DSG's a day.

2010-2012 they might have had Service Campaign '34F7' carried out from 2014 on, that is synthetic oil changed to mineral & a software update.

Then 2013-2015 ones might have had Service Campaign '34H5' done starting from 2017, a software update.

This can be in any model of VW Group car with a DQ200, so no more than 250Nm or 192 ps, FWD and petrol or diesel.
