Changing Turbo on a 4x4 1.9tdi, Help/advice needed

Featured Replies

Hiya Folks

Blew my turbo a while ago and got a used turbo today for my car. Thinking of starting to work on it within a few days.

Im dreading this job cuz i have heard and read its awfully tight to get around to some of the screws on the 4x4.

Im hoping someone who has done this on a 4x4 before has some advice to offer on how i should go about it to make it easier on myself.

From what i understand i can do most of the work from up top, but theres a bolt or two i have to take out from below, is that correct?

I have also read that some say u have to take the subframe out, and others say you have to loosen the transfer case to access the bolts u need from below, others say none of this is necessary, so i wonder whats really correct?

obviously i dont want to take anything more off than what i absolutely need, unless its something that makes the job a whole lot easier.

I wish i knew the turbo was on its last legs when i changed the flywheel a couple of months ago, but i guess this is how it goes.

Also i need to flush my intercooler system, any tips on how i go about doing that, what do i use to flush it with? i assume the intercooler need to come out to do this properly?

Thanks in advance for your help and tips

Do you completed it ?

No not yet, hopefully i will have time to do it during the christmas holidays.

I need do it too 😀 today i am going to start. We can stay in touch and help each other, what type of motor do you have ? BLS ?

i have the BXE engine. I have no idea the diffrences when it comes to changing the turbo on bls vs bxe, but i assume most of the work should be the same.

Do u have the turbo thats once piece with the manifoild or the kind that can be taken off of the manifoild? Mine is one piece with the manifoild.

Sure that sounds good, i appriate help and i will try help you as good as i can, but until i start i dont really have much knowlegde on what to do.

Hi, yes, i waiting for refurbished turbo now, I only disassembled the right wheel, intake, battery, removed the silentblock, pulled the engine and removed the turbo and intake, it was difficult but 5-6 hours, the mechanic told me that it would be 700-800€ to repair, so I'll try it myself.

if you have questions, feel free to ask

very nice, good job

is this car also a 4x4?

you say you pulled the engine, what do you mean? did u losen it from the engine mounts?

yes, I removed only 1 of the 3 Bushing from engine, and then ratchet and i pulled engine to front

yes its 4x4 6 gears 77kw 1.9TDi

sorry for my english i am from Slovakia

The turbo has arrived, I'm going to install it tomorrow 😀 I hope it will be successful because I'm a trained electrician from school and not a mechanic 😂

Thank you for sharing that, i was thinking the same thoughts, why not loosen the engine a bit and pull the engine to make more space. Which one of the engine mounts did u loosen to make more space? i think i will do the same.

So you and i have exactly same car then, same color too it looks like :)

You say u removed the silentblock, what do you mean silentblock?

did u have to go under the car to remove anything from below? i guess u have to go under to remove the exhaust from the turbo?  u didnt remove driveshafts or anything like that?

do you have to flush ur intercooler? i have to flush mine to remove all the oil it sucked up, but im not sure what do use to flush it, do you happen to know?

No problem with your english, mine isnt that good either, im from Norway so not born to speak english either but thats ok as long as we understand eachother :)

Thanks again for your help, i have planned to start my turbo job 26th of december and hope to be able to do it in 2 days.

Thats great the turbo has arrived for u.

when u got it off, im sure u will get it back together. im thinking its a good idea to put some oil in the turbo oil line just so the turbo has some oil for startup.

im not a mechanic either, but same situation as you. Mechanic wants 1000 euro to do the job, and thats a lot of money on a old car, so have to do it myself instead.

Disconnect the injector wiring connector near the tandem pump and crank the engine on the starter for a good 10-20 seconds to prime the oil feed to the turbo, reconnect the injector plug and clear any error codes via a diagnostic tool.

Thank you MicMac, thats good to know for the first startup.

Anyone have any thoughts on what i can flush the intercooler with?

Are you flushing it in situ?

  • Author

that depends, i dont know how hard it is to take out, if its hard to get out thats preferable, otherwise i will take it out.

You could use a couple of cans of brake cleaner, as long as oil isn't gushing out after a catastrophic turbo failure I wouldn't worry, there will always be an oily residue/drip because of the pollution control system upstream of the turbo.

It's not unknown for dodgy mechanics to use this as a reason to fit a new turbo to unwary owners!

@hectus silent block, or bushing i dont know :D

i only unscrew DPF filter, and left wheel, and that shaft that coming from gearbox to hub.

tommorow i will flush my intercooler, i try something but i dont know how. some tutorials should be on interner i will watch something

Thank you. However i fair its a lot in the intercooler since when my turbo broke, it sucked the engine dry of oil within a few secs. I think a lot of it ended up in the exhaust, but i will definitly have to check the intercooler and hoses.

I might just take it off to be sure unless its a big job in itself.

Mine turbo starts whistling, so i dont go over 2200 rpm, because i was scared, and and 2 times it sucked in some oil and made a noise, after that i stored car into garage and start waiting for time :D i send you video

Thank you, so you removed the engine mount on the side where the alternator is. I will do the same.

I dont have dpf filter, so hopefully there isnt something else i have to remove instead.

Great information, i know a lot more what i have to do now.

Disconnect the lower intercooler hose(s) and see what comes out.

I doubt the turbo passed so much oil, instead of a runaway engine it would have hydraulically locked and may need more than just a turbo!

yes bushing on the left side, if you dont have DPF i think it will be easier

Mine been stored now for a while also jakubini, had to hunt for a while for a turbo for a good price. Its going to be good to finally get it fixed, unfortunatly, i think its time to sell my octavia, its the 2nd big thing that happened to it within a few months. First thing was the flywheel.

Looked at your turbo video now, thats one wore out turbo! i suspect mine is worse than that too. How many kilometers is on ur car? mine has 270 000.

MicMac the car actually ran until i stopped it with the key, it started losing power, it smoked like crazy and i thought maybe i had blown the headgasket, but then the oil warning came on and i turned the car off. Showed nothing on the dipstick, but of course the engine was still warm at that point, so im sure theres still some left. Also theres tons of oil residue out the exhaust.

I really hope theres no more problems with the engine, but time will tell.

Are you guys replacing the whole turbo/exhaust manifold unit or just replacing the turbo core?

@hectus

That's as good a turbo failure as you'll get so you should be ok, the oil pressure light would have been triggered by the loss of pressure not necessarily quantity of oil and yes the dipstick will show low on a freshly stopped engine.

I would expect a loss of catalytic converter performance and a lot of smoke/possibly flames from the exhaust pipe upon restarting until it burns off.
