Replaced blower resistor and still not working

Featured Replies

Can anyone offer any further advice please?

Just replaced the blower resistor as I've had no fan for a few years. I wanted to be ready for the cold weather and not have to fight with the ice and condensation. I followed the brilliant tutorial and found it really straightforward to replace the part. What else could it be? I really need to get this sorted before the bad weather comes.

Have you checked the fuses...   Chances are if the resistor packed in the fuse may have blown too.  Also check the fan hasn't seized if it's not been used for a while.

Hi Skomaz, thanks for the reply. Can't quite fathom the fuse box, give me a clue please? Willing to chuck a can of WD at the fan but it's not visible from the top. What's the best way to access the fan? Wouldn't mind giving it a wobble first.

Had the car for 8 years and the fan only ever worked on the highest setting. That stopped about 2 years ago. I'm determined to get this going again just need some expertise and know how.

For some unknown reason my fuses do not correspond to the image on the inside cover of the box.

The car is right hand drive, the illustration on the cover is wrong hand drive.

Thank you for your response KenONeill. I am aware of the left hand/right hand drive but if you have seen the picture of my fuse box, you will notice that several key fuses are missing or the wrong amp. I think I'm looking to replace 39 -blower and 42 - heated rear windscreen. Going to get on with that this morning and see how it goes. I will report the outcome later 🤞

Forgot to say ..   you can sometimes reach the fan blades through the pollen filter opening if you have small hands.  If not then it should be easy to remove the fan and motor to check it spins freely from the passenger footwell.

Firstly Skomaz I was just looking at the fuse box for the obvious green or white fuses to try to get my bearings and work my way around from there. I hate anything to do with electrics because it's such a minefield.

I've replaced the blower fuse in the position I believe is 39 and I still have no action. I'm going to attempt to follow your advice and locate the fan from the passenger footwell. Does this require removing panels?

It might be the actual switch is kaput, so no matter which you set it to now, it no longer works (I guess it spent 6 years on max setting?)

Also, just checking that you have looked at the Brown 25Amp bottom left, 3rd across, just to make sure that we are seeing the same is all.  This is for blower motor.

Question, I see you are talking about rear window heater, also a 25Amp fuse, just wondering if that is working now?

You'd do better to get a can of GT85 and use the can of WD40 to coat garden tools.  GT85 is better, I've used it on fans and other motors in house and cars. - https://gt85.co.uk/  If you can brush or blow or vacuum away and dust/debris in the area first all the better.

****-poor fuse box information seems to be regular thing on the VWSkoda models and there can be more than one possible fuse number/location so read through the whole list for possibilities.  Best not to just do a visual check on a fuse but a check with a multimeter or swapping out with know working fuse of the same type and amperage.

What are the two items below for?

Thanks nta16, from memory that's how the stereo is wired in. I wanted to replace the original radio and have a USB to charge phone. This is Halfords (apologies for swearing) handywork.

I was really hoping to get away with doing the bare minimum (I'm not lazy just terrified of anything electrical) and now realise I'm going to have to spend the afternoon in the passenger footwell. I must also confess at this stage that I have only just figured out that I have a pollen filter and it's location. I'm not looking forward to removing the fan housing but can't think of an alternative.

Wish me luck 🤞

Hi varooom, I have no idea what is working. I did some shopping yesterday, a much nicer activity for me, got fuses and tools. Today the work begins, trying to figure out what the heck is going on with my poor, neglected car. Seems I've let it get into a state and I have to put it right. She's got previous electrical faults that have 'gone away' and been easily forgotten but I know that in order to put my mind at rest, I must deal with it.

The first major red flag was the day the wipers would not stop, even with the engine off and the key removed!! Skoda had no idea what to do when I presented them with that. Second major red flag was the wipers not working at all, about 2 years after the first problem. I have airbag light on dash which disappears after a while.

All I'm trying to do is ensure that the heater will work before the bad weather comes .

If you take the glovebox off the fan should be straight in front of you held in by about 5 screws.

From memory there are plenty of videos on YouTube for the Fabia that should be pretty much identical and will help explain.

Good luck!

Sounds like you have a bunch of wiring shorting out to ground, and a relay(?) stuck open at one point for the wipers.

Might be an idea to locate someone with VCDS to scan the car for fault codes to maybe narrow things down.

Skomaz and varooom *breaking news*

So I pulled cover and wadding away from under the glove box. Located and removed pollen filter, which is black, shoved hand into the fan and it's free spinning. Do I have to/ should I still remove the glove box and the fan cover?

I'm hoping that by process of elimination, as the fan is free, I can focus on the switch.

Hopefully you have a carbon pollen filter, so the colour is normal.

Nice, so that most likely rules out a duff fan for now, it could still be a culprit as you never know.

I would be checking with a multimeter to see what power if any is getting to the fan.

Nice work today, keep it up and the car might be working as intended soon.

Flicked cover off control panel, knobs flying off as expected. The buttons were never seated properly. Does this unit just lift out like stereo?

@varooom

I didn't anticipate this level of support from anyone on the forum, way above and beyond my expectations. Thank you doesn't cover how grateful I am for your time and expertise 🙏

Always check your car battery is not low in charge as this can cause problems and can hinder sorting electrical problems, if you have a multimeter you can check the battery (an hour or two after the car has ben parked) if you have a suitable smart charger you charge the battery on the car, it can take a lot longer than many think to fully recharge a battery, a smart charger will go into maintenance mode once fully charged so you can leave it fitted as long as you can, could be overnight, could be longer.

After you have sorted your fan/switch, the cabin filter is dirty whatever material it is, very dirty if it's supposed to be white, the wipers if not as varooom has put could be a few other things and perhaps the switch.

Airbag light if for passenger may be as it should be if it's like the one on my wife's 2015 Fabia Mk3 in that it stays on for quite a while after driving off.  If you don't have your paper printed copy you can download a pdf copy of the Owner's Manual, from the following link, which should give you lots of information on warning lights (but fuse diagram might still be wrong). - https://manual.skoda-auto.com/004/en-com/Models

Good luck, you're doing well already.

This is impossible 😭

I've removed the fascia panel and the only screw I can see holding the unit in place. Someone's been here before me because the corner clips are damaged. I can't lever the unit out. There are no end of clips holding it in place but even with an extra pair of hands and both of us going at it, it will not come out.

Have I missed something? I'm following the schematic and the only thing I haven't got is 2 screws at 3.1 point 5, labelled 7 on the diagram.

Try to take a more zoomed out picture, and some from several angles.

Hopefully someone has removed before and knows the "way"

Will do.

I'm now at the point where the dread of starting the car at 6am, in the hope that it's defrosted and ready to go at 7, is starting to look like a good option.

Google: "ceramic car heater 12v dc" and plug one in if you have to temporarily, handy in Winter to speed up defrosting if you don't have heated windscreen.
