VRS 245 "whine" at about 60mph

Featured Replies

Hi folks,  new member, just got a 2019 245 Vrs Challenge, few things need sorting (it was Arnold Clark, don't judge me!) but there's a worrying whining noise that seems to begin around 60 mph. I had a similar noise with a previous 2016 diesel Vrs, never really got to the bottom of it, I just traded in eventually.

Anyone got any ideas??

Welcome.

How many miles has it done.  What does the Full Service History show as been done.

Maybe not this, but.

So my guess.

The VAQ Diff will not have been serviced at 3 years / 30,000 miles.   So that is outstanding and needs done, so that the car is Serviced to the Manufacturers Recommendations, Guidelines or even Schedule.

Not part of a Service Plan, probably not in the 2 Services that Arnold Clark gave you in the deal.   Needs doing or the Warranty they gave might mean they are paying out if the VAQ fails.

PS.

Now on Mk4 vRS TSI's some Dealerships are saying due at 2 years.  But ARNOLD CLARK staff might not know about that anymore than about @ 3 years / 30,000 miles.

So a FULL MAIN DEALER SERVICE HISTORY, just not a history as serviced to the Manufacturers Recommendations, Guidelines or even Schedule.

From the Mk4 section.

Hi toot, cheers.

It’s only just passed 23k, should’ve said it was a DSG too.

As far as the history is concerned I can’t put eyes on it right now!

If it only starts around 60mph, could it be a wind noise?

Does it change according to revs or gears?

Is it still there when you open windows? (possibly hard to confirm at 60!).

Does it change on overrun, decelerating, braking, cornering?

Gaz

OK.

So the DSG is not due Oil change to 80,000 miles. (Consider that maybe at 40,000 miles or sooner than 80,000, but the Schedule is 80,000.)

Re the VAQ.

See what Arnold's gave as the Servicing,   Oil & Inspection and Extended Scope.   Maybe Brake Fluid, Pollen Filters, maybe a look at the Air Filter etc.

ASK A SKODA DEALERSHIP OR CUSTOMER SERVICES FOR THE FULL SERVICE AND WARRANTY RECORD ON THE SYSTEM IF AC HAS JUST THE BASIC INFO.

That is if the car came from an Arnold Clark Dealer that is a non Skoda Dealership.

(Nothing stops them getting on the system and have everything on it available for you.)

But you need to know the Diff was done.  If not it needs done.  @ 3 years / 30,000 miles.   Even sooner.

Thanks both.

As I said I had a diesel and it did a similar, but more obvious, thing. Replaced it with a 245 and it ran sweet, no noise.

That one got killed by a fish van and now this one is making a similar noise.

You need to get onto a motorway to hear it and it’s like a background drone. I don’t think it’s wind noise (emphasis on think) but I’ll get into the FSH.

I’ve flagged it wi AC and I’ll see what happens.

Cheers again

Have we considered a wheel bearing at all? :)

Sorry Gaz, seems to go up and down uniformly with speed and no apparent change on cornering. Hard to hear on side or A roads. The missus could hear it yesterday so it’s no just my rubbish ears!

We did, it’s no that kind of noise I don’t think. I got the last one checked and forked out for a bearing and the effing thing made the same noise first time out on a M-way 😂

I have the same noise but it does get just a bit worse on left hand bends so leading me to think its the R/H front bearing. Going down hill coasting its no worse so to my way of thinking it cant be the diff with no load on it,  There is no play in either off the right hand bearing's so will have to wait till it gets worse.

The 1st Octavia I ever drove was a mates for me to just try before I got one. His was awful with a really loud off-side front bearing on left handers. I said you need to change that so he said how do you know?  I jacked it up and there was  a huge amount of play in the wheel.
