Infotainment and emergency call issues

Featured Replies

Evening everyone,

I’m hoping someone might be able to give me some advice on the seriousness of two issues.

First, I want to just say I really like the Scala. Bought one 4 days ago after spending months researching different makes and models of car. The car is ideal for what I need and I bought an approved used from a Skoda dealership. It’s a 21 reg, 1L, SE L with under 20,000 miles on the clock.

When I drove in the dark the other day for the first time, I had the SOS error emergency call appear with contact workshop. I’ve read on here that it might be a SIM fault. If anyone has had this, is it an easy fix with the dealership? It’s under warranty so I don’t have to worry about cost but wanted to know if it can be easily fixed.

The second issue is about Apple Car Play freezing. This has happened twice in 4 days. The navigation goes and I have to turn the car on and off. On the second time, it was linked to the SOS issue above. Turning the car on and off did not fix it - I saw a video online about pressing the emergency call then cancelling the call which seemed to get rid of the SOS fault and the Apple car play worked again. However, I don’t want to do this every time it happens. I’ve been told that all the checks were made before handover and that the sales person at the dealership does not know why I’ve experienced problems. Again, has anyone encountered this and knows if it is fixable or have I got a dud model?

I’m calling the dealership tomorrow to discuss the faults and book it in but wondered if I should look at returning it within the 14 days and getting a refund. How serious are these faults? Should I be worried?

A few forum searches on the forum will sadly scare you about these fault's.

Shame they played the ignorant card with you 🤥

Yeah - I stopped searching after a while as I'm concerned I have just spent a lot of money on a car that may be faulty...

I'm hoping someone on here will be able to say, "Easy fixes. They just need to do X and Y..." then I might sleep better tonight!

I still have the option to return the car within 14 days so I have 9 days left to decide.

There are some recent reports of getting updates to the OCU module, and depending on your radio and version that "pairs" up well.  The system needs harmony with all the versions, so you cannot just update one only.

Hopefully a few members will post up their recent experiences.  Sadly you need to push hard for fixes.

Do you know your Infotainment software version installed?  Usually hold down your Menu/Setup button for about 10 seconds to enter engineering menu.  Look around for any details that can identify software version loaded and post back images.

These are fixable most are updates sos might need a new ocu or updated. Informant press On button till it restarts speakers thump this does a reset but doesn’t change your settings. Look at getting Skoda connect go to website take a look doesn’t suit everyone. But you get map updates app updates maps in realtime plus more

Hi, I have a 2022 Scala, and I had same issues with Android Auto, freezing randomly when I'm using Google maps/ Waze. Few weeks ago I did a reset to media unit (press On button till it restarts, about 10 seconds) and it seems is working fine after this reset.

I asked my dealer if is there any update, but unfortunately they are not very receptive, just asked me to take the care in service when this issue occur because they need to confirm that I really have a problem  :) .

Cheers 1982. I'm feeling a little better about it now.

Called up the dealership today and spoke to the service team who said this is a common issue when the software update has not fully completed. It's like you both said, the OCU might have issues with it or the last infotainment software didn't update properly. It causes issues with the SOS emergency call, Bluetooth and infotainment systems. They told me the cause is linked to the car system struggling to switch between 4G and 5G signals. If you pass an area with slightly less 5G coverage, the car gets stuck between switching to 4G and it stops working. This can cause other issues with Bluetooth connectivity with phones. I tried getting around it by hardwiring the phone in today but then had an issue getting car play to work. Unplugged it, turn off/on again and it connected via Bluetooth and it worked so was able to plug the phone in to charge and all was well.

Got it booked in for two weeks time and it is all under warranty so it is all covered. They will redo the software update and failing that, I'll need a new OCU which they can order in form the factory. In the meantime, I'll just have to press the emergency call button then cancel it if it happens though I don't really want to do this often.

I'm not convinced with Skoda Connect 1982. Do you find it useful? I've done a bit of reading on it and I doesn't offer much that I need. I listen mainly to podcasts and books when driving so not a massive fan of the radio. I have spoken to different dealerships over the last six months whilst deciding on cars and they have all said the apple/android car links work much better. Plus, it is free.

I find it useful like ot informs you of any traffic problems even if you are not using the satnav And gives you alternative routes. And it’s online and use it as a hotspot

I had a similar issue and had a whole new unit fitted under warranty which fixed the problem until yesterday. What appears to happen is the SOS message flashes up and nect time you stop and start the car it says loading profile and just hangs rendering the unit useless. Has happened twice more today. I'll be on to Skoda in the morning as I don't have the willpower to do it now and listen to them telling me it's not a problem

Hi Moordown,

How long was it until the issue happened again? I got my car back on the 15th Feb and they tell me the problem is now sorted. Mine was a software update and the dealer has had the same issue before in other Skoda models. It has been alright so far but I'm wondering how long it will last.

To update on my original post: after the SOS issue, I had the engine warning light come on a few days later - emissions filter and clutch sensor issues. It's all been fixed but I was not pleased having had the car for less than a week. What was also annoying was talking to the manager of the local dealership who said, "It is under warranty though..." It really annoyed me. That's not the point. Whether it is under warranty or not, after spending a lot of money on a car (and probably hitting a bonus or two of a sales person) I don't expect to have any issues with the car - it's not even two years old yet! I wish they would just leave the talk to the service mechanics who tell it as it is.

As I mentioned, it's all be fixed and seems to be working alright. Complained to the original dealership I bought it from and got some compensation. It takes the Mick really. I genuinely like the car and just hope I can get through a few more years before I start to fork out more substantial money on it.

Hi, I don't normally vent on forums but I thought I'd share my recent experience. I had the same symptom, SOS Call Activated on dash then goes off. Aldo had Stop Start error

Scala SE L 19 plate was booked in for service & recall (SOS fault) in December. All done, left the dealer thinking great. It was the last visit to the dealer before the warranty ran out. Guess what, January engine management light comes on. Again thought great! Got a call mid Feb from dealer, 'Mr R the part for your car's recall is in now can you book it in please'. Thought it was a bit strange but booked it in for yesterday. Asked to check EML while they had it in to see what was going on. Waited a couple of hours the service advisor comes up to me. 'Good job your sitting down, couple of issues. OCU module is faulty & needs replacing & an EVAP canister'. OK how much? '£1700'. WTF? Your telling me the same part that I've brought in for reapir is faulty? This is the reason why dealers & manufacturers get such a bad rap.

I bring my car in for a recall in December when the warranty is still valid, get told it's been done. Then by chance 6 weeks after the warranty runs out, oh call Mr R tell him the part is here then we'll update the OCU software and tell him it's faulty & needs replacing to the tune of £1100. He won't have a leg to stand on with Skoda because he bought it from a non dealer with no service history before bringing it here. Aplogies about the rant but I'm so angry.

What do you think my chances are of getting it replaced under warranty? Slim. I've emailed Skoda & the guy at the dealership is ringing them but my guess is he doesn't. I could be proved wrong but doubt it.

@ksilsden Not sure what they did exactly in December, but maybe you will be able to get a goodwill contribution for the OCU fault that was supposed to have been fixed back in December.  Can you check your invoice for what is on it?  It seems you have emailed Skoda UK, so now you need to wait for them to look into your case, so close to being out of warranty, you might get some contribution.

The evap canister you will most likely have to swallow, it's often caused by over filling the tank (not saying you have done this)

Thanks for your reply. It just seems they've purposely not done the recall in december to me. I'll have to be honest I wouldn't want to pay for any of it. Two months out of warranty & the faulty part is related to a known fault on many cars not just the Scala or Skoda brand. I could understand if they'd have said the turbo had gone or the battery is faulty but to say the recalled part is faulty just doesn't sit right. The invoice from december doesn't say anything about the recall. Why lie to me and say the technician is doing it, then say it's done? That's why they haven't put it in writing. No proof from my side then.

Re the evap, yes I have overfilled. 🤚Hold my hands up to that one. The guy said this needs replacing because it's probably filled up with rubbish from the fuel & is clogged up. I did search the fault when it came up on the dash, I have a cheap reader & a search on here revealed over filling.

I lost my faith in dealers a long time ago when I bought my first new car. Backwards & forwards with issues, being fobbed off, lied to. Do you think the ombudsman would be worth a try if they reject my complaint?

@ksilsden If you have documented evidence of the SOS error (phone pictures or videos) taken from that date, and the fact you was supposed to go in for a recall in December, then this all helps your case.  So maybe, just maybe then you have some evidence that you presented your car to investigate these errors.

Good of you to fess up about the evap, it's one you may have to take on the chin (nothing stopping you from taking it to another garage)

I myself don't have much trust in dealers, it's amazing how much they seem to fob you off (they invented gaslighting I am sure)

Keep at Skoda UK, they are your most likely chance of getting something done, more so if you have evidence of fault whilst in warranty.

I have no evidence of the fault other than I knew it was there when I took it in.

I've had the dealer on the phone earlier who said they've spoke to Skoda & they've both agreed to fit the new OCU module at a cost to me of £180 ish. Good result you might think but still paying nearly £200 for a faulty component that should have been done under warranty still erks me. I said I'd get back to them. I might wait for Skoda to get back to me if they ever do.

With regards to the EVAP. If you over fill your car once you damage the EVAP canister & sensor?

  • 3 weeks later...

Quick update. Balls in Skoda's court. Said I wasn't happy with the £200. See what they say.

Where is the canister and valve? Is it an easy change? I’ll try anything once.

Chipping in too. I picked up scala two weeks ago, and it’s been back to the garage because of SOS issue and cruise control issue (wouldn’t come on at all on one journey). They confirmed they’ve looked at the SOS thing, got the repair details and they say they’ve done two updates:

TPI 2063244/13

TPI 2063258/10

anyone got access to the database and what exactly these are?

Cruise control was another story. Dealer said it could be dirty on the sensor. Now I don’t keep my cars spotless but two weeks after a main dealer valet it’s a bit unlikely to me that it’s unable to turn on at all at that point.

If my wife wasn’t just about to have a baby I think we’d have handed it back but as it is we’ll probably live with it while it’s still got manufacturer warranty over next year and see what happens.

Updates might be only skoda know customer doesn't need to.  Cruise have you got ACC (adaptive cruise control) only uses sensors. if not its manual you set the speed and decrease speed by the rocker switch on the end of left stalk it doesn't slow down if yo are getting close to a car you have to use the rocker or flick the switch ontop

Yeah, you can apparently get them if you have subscription to certain service systems so hoping someone here might be able to take a look.

yes, although it was on a completely clear A road, and it wouldn’t turn on at all. On stop and restart it worked ok but as it was going in anyway asked them to take a look. Not thrilled to be honest, for a two year old car to be having issues like this it’s a bit of a pain.

Why would dealer say clean your sensor when you don't have acc sounds a fob off take it back

Scala 1.0 SE L 2024 Does anyone else have their emergency call and satnav shut down under thick cloud? Nothing wrong when the dealership look at it……

I have noticed my android auto plays up sometimes under cloudy conditions but not done it for a while. If there is still an issue with these comms it's a joke. How can they still sell these cars knowing there's a problem. Mines a 19 plate and most journeys I still get the SOS call activated. Infotainment locks up occasionally, can't even adjust the climate control.
