Bilstien b8 upgrade or b4?

Featured Replies

Time to upgrade these suspension what is everyone's thoughts on the B8 shocks? I'm wanting not too much harshness and lowering. Moderate lowering using eibachs but either b4 or b8's and will also be dropping down to 17" alloys.

I've heard the ride is too firm or harsh with b8's?

I don't have them but from what I read they're not necessarily harder or too firm  compared to stock with the eibach springs. So you wouldn't have to go to 17"s. That said, I reckon the 17" were the best ride comfort proposition based on my experience on a mk5 golf..

I love the look of 19s but on the roads here and the level of harshness and bone rattling I'd find then very difficult to live with despite positive appearance and say advantages on a track.

Go for B6 instead. Same valving but stock height. Works well with moderate lowering (prokit etc).

B6/8 is definitely firmer but not hard. With the stiffer rate of lowering springs the ride is noticeably firmer. The control of the suspension is amazing though. Definitely worth it. I lived with it (B6 + prokit) for 2 years with wife and kids too. No complaints.

B6 sounds good choice. Will they lower the car though? Only reason I'd go B8 is if I'm gonna use 17" wheels so lowering would fill the arch/gap.

And yes the state of the roads is like driving over the grand canyon right now my fillings are about to fall out 🤣 (hence the 17's)

The shocks don't lower the car. The springs do that. But you can't fit stock height springs to B8 as the shocks are too short. That's why B6 are better. You can use stock springs or a mild drop. If fitting B8 you NEED lowering springs.

Actually B6 will raise the height slightly due to the increased pressure in the shocks. Not loads. Probably 5-10mm on stock springs. Less than 5mm with lowering springs. So if a lowering is listed as 35mm it will be closer to 30mm on B6. B8 will be closer to the listed lowering due to the shorter shaft.

do you feel the ride is that bad on the 18's? If you were on the 19's I'd understand, because the rubber band tyres on those are a bit too severe for our roads.

I did notice the difference in bumps when I changed to pilot sport 4 tyres. They just feel a bit forgiving over the slight imperfections.

I'm waiting for delivery of KW V3 coilovers, just so I'm able to dial in the suspension to how I want it. The main thing I'm wanting to sort out is the lurch backwards on acceleration, certainly from a standing start.

Yes they feel very harsh over these roads but tbh I might look into KW street comfort coilovers as that may dampen the ride instead of going down to 17" wheels.

I've heard good things about KW

Personally went with B4 and Eibach Pro kit. Plenty firm enough but not too firm you lose fillings.
