Front caliper slider pins

Featured Replies

Greetings Mk1 enthusiasts,

I am replacing my front right side caliper and one of the hex head slider pins has rounded out from rust (someone in the past didnt replace the plastic cap 😞) So I need a new set of pins.

My brake discs are 239mm and the caliper has a 48mm Piston. When I went to get the new caliper I initially was supplied with a caliper with a 54mm piston as using the reg on parts websites seems to point to that size, however it was too big for my pads.  I have got the correct caliper now but new slider pins were not included.

My Fabia is an 06 1.2 htp 54 Horses! 💨

I have looked on fleabay and found these - https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/333980547564?fits=Plat_Gen%3AMK+I|Model%3AFabia&hash=item4dc2cab9ec:g:ZRIAAOSwTSFjc3Uv&amdata=enc%3AAQAHAAAA8BEL%2BfzidKADCX1mRfO2EOzmaATDyR0dAquTkbSI1fwOViqZ11s99xzYwJmdFDiGQvdQPCwPrWjFnpoWV5lOY574XVUGd5hb3ZVJ06C7mm%2FRnT5dZo3sOG4PUqgYGTHSlbr%2F8tzsLG6sKDQf0spO2J%2FT2KcGsfN22wZrV75hu%2FR0DUzLhoqPf22wpZ2b6TzNNl10yHZcEpr5o1IU107%2BigHOXFtl7jT8%2FozBsyA2P3zpwrbShatkfIIsq3XM7bGutR0AX49K2vtuLwwXAWipfpA%2B9rSYFSBjWn%2BG5B%2BIDWZomiJkUkeHf2yAu7MevcQGog%3D%3D|tkp%3ABk9SR6r12t_FYQ

However it states that they fit a caliper designed for 256mm discs and I cannot see any designed for 239mm discs.

I don't suppose anyone has the same size as mine and has replaced the pins or has knowledge of the compatibility as just want to make sure I order the correct ones first time if possible 😁🤞

Cheers people 🙂

All the slider pins are the same size in my experience, those should certainly do the job nicely.

Just to double check, you're aware that a special 7mm Allen key is needed? 6mm will just round it out.

@Carlston that autodoc kit looks completely wrong judging by the picture. Wouldn't trust it at all.

And you gave him all the part numbers I had already, except the bolts he actually needed.

But still better than sep's effort. 😛

My ebay link is from the same seller that the OP linked to, and should be the correct kit.

The "ERT 410082" kit on autodoc is listed as compatible with OEM part number 171698447A which is the important "guide bushes" part. The bolts and guide sleeves are made in one piece rather than two. However, I've removed the link just in case it doesn't fit.

Fair enough, but he probably just needs one M8 bolt of the right length.

Just note the sleeves were dropped for 171 698 447 B

4 N  90329105 socket head bolt with hexagon socket head M8X49 2

5 N  90329206 socket head bolt with hexagon socket head M8X59 2

My local bolt supplier sells M8x50 cap head bolts zinc plated for 50p each and M8x60 for 60p each, and these are the very highest 12.9 tensile strength ones. If you want plain black ones it's even cheaper. 25p and 33p each. Still 12.9 tensile strength.

Cap head M8 bolts use a 6mm allen key.

If you're purchasing aftermarket, 171698447B still tends to link to the same parts as 171698447A.

So many online catalogs/eBay listings are pure bogus.

They often say they are compatible, when they aren't at all (not saying in this case they ain't)

GiGo = Garbage in Garbage out was how I was taught PC input.

239mm set-up shown here: floating caliper brake; brake caliper housing; bra... - Fabia(FAB) [EUROPA 2006 year] (7zap.com)

Two different length Allen-head (6mm tool) bolts going through two different length stainless tubes, no rubber/plastic closure caps on this version, unfortunately.

Part numbers for all the bits including pads shown there.

Sorry to bump an old thread but can somone confirm that the 239mm set-up doesnt require dust caps? Is that an intentional design choice? Seems strange to leave them out when they stop all manner of crap getting in the ends.

I'm doing the brakes this week and want to get everything sorted asap.

You can possibly use the blanking plugs from an FSIII caliper, or otherwise improvise, but it's probably shutting the stable door after the horse has bolted, at this point.

I’ve ordered new discs and pads and if need be will get new guide pins, so it may be worth it to essentially start a new. There’s a few kits on eBay for the FS-III that have the caps included so maybe I’ll spring for those.

Thanks for the advice!

A further query:

I have replaced the drums on the rear with a brand new shoe assembly from Pagid and new drums from Febi Bilstein. I have adjusted them to what I believe to be correct - the wheel spins freely when jacked up and I can’t hear anything rubbing or catching on the inside. I’ve slackened off the handbrake cable and readjusted for the new brakes.

However, when I drive the car even for a short period the drums get very hot, too hot to touch even. There is also a high pitch squeal that appears to be in time with the wheel rotating. Does anyone know what could be causing this? Is is a lubrication issue? Could the bearing nut be too tight? I torqued it to spec (50Nm). I know brakes get hot but this seems a bit excessive.

Thanks again.
