High Beam and AFS error

Featured Replies

Hello! I have issues with my 2016 MK3. It started on 1st of January, so the new year would start properly :)).

The high beam on the left headlight it's not working, getting error on this and on AFS. The problem is that it's not everytime. It usually happens in the morning. If I have a drive, stop the car and start it again in 10 mins or so, no errors, the headlight works as expected.

They do the usual dance on startup, no strange things happening there.

I've attached a photo of a VCDS scan.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

I had the left unit not operating properly a couple of months ago on consecutive days. In the morning, it decided to park itself at the bottom of its travel and it stayed there. When I parked up and switched the car off, I tried them again and they were fine. Fine the next morning too. Then I left work after a couple of hours and it did it again! When I returned that afternoon they were fine and they’ve been so since. It’s a weird one….

Exactly the same situation...

Hi,

I have had the same issue from time to time with the left headlight. But now the issue have been fore some days and hasn't gone away.

Also have the C1098 fault code when I checked with vcds.

Anyone who got an clue on what the problem might be? Or is the only solution to buy an new headlight?

Regards

based on the error description "sensor for variable lighting motor", and assuming u have SLA headlights - it sounds like the motor associated to roller that does the high beam shape/masking is failing.

it would explain why it won't let u put the high beam on.

if that is the case, sadly that will require an entire headlight replacement.

First thing I’d be doing is swapping the AFS module bolted to the bottom of the headlamps.

see if the module is faulty.

if this fault doesn’t follow the module then yeah I’d say a faulty headlight is on the books!

other thing you can do is run basic settings and look at the live data at the time and compare the left and right headlight.

I was hoping it was only a cable or something that is not wired how it should be...(because of the signal failure)

To take the AFS modules out, I have to remove the bumper and the headlight, right? 😔

Sorry, still learning the quote part 😅

The first part was meant for @JR RS and second for @ApertureS! 😁

So it is the afs module that are controlling the motor that is mounted inside the headlight? Is it possible to switch left and right to see if problem follow?

The motor inside the headlight is not completely dead, it make some movement but gives up after some seconds and tells check headlight and afs.

I have the wiring diagram for the headlight, but haven't had the time to measure it yet. I have been seeing other posts that their might be an wire problem.

I have the wiring diagram for the headlight if you want?

Yeah, you have to dismount the bumper

U could try swapping out the modules as suggested above, but keep in mind that each headlight has 3x modules, one of them being the ballast.

Unfortunately getting to them is a bumper off job.  To do that, u need the wheels off and wheel arch liner off, ideally.

U can see 2 of the modules in the bottom pic below.

I made a how to guide here.

Thanks for the info! I will give it a try with swapping the modules...

One more thing. I will post it here, to not create another topic. So, I did a full scan and some other errors showed up:

Also, I have some oil residue near the oil cap, but it's not from it (I think, because I've bought a new one, replaced it, and cleaned the area).

Any ideas? 🙈

Thank you for the help!

So today when when I where going to lose the bumper the lights worked and their was no new fault codes after deleting 🤣

But I removed the bumper and switched to modules anyway to see if the problem comes back on the same side or not. I will post back if it does.

🤣

Mine in the morning complained and in the evening, all good 😑.

How long did it take? Any photos during the process?

Let me know if the error moves to the other side.

Their is some guides on Youtube but I guess it takes about 20min or so, I only removed it about 15cm so I could get the light out. The cables to the PDC and the rest was still connected

@gnuttisch any update? did the error moved to the other side?

No update, the fault disappeared right before I where going to swap the modules, but I swapped them anyway and put everything back together.

So now I just have to wait to see if the fault will come back and if it's following the module.

Hi,

These weekend I got the same errors as before, on my left headlight. So their was no success with changing the modules. I remember that I got the same faults once before in the middle of the summer.

It feels that their is something in the headlight that isn't alright.

Regards
